This charming fishing port on the western coast of Istria offers a wealth of attractions. Originally an island, the town was connected to the mainland in the 18th century by filling in the channel. In recent decades, Rovinj has emerged as one of Croatia’s most renowned tourist destinations, drawing a large number of visitors each year. The relics of Saint Euphemia are housed in the church atop the hill that overlooks the entire city. Euphemia was a Christian woman, the daughter of a Roman senator, who was arrested for refusing to make sacrifices to the god Ares. After enduring various tortures, she was condemned to death in the gladiatorial arena at Chalcedon, where she was killed by a lion, becoming one of the first Christian martyrs and a saint in both Catholic and Orthodox traditions. The Croatian town is interwoven with winding cobbled streets, small squares, and beautiful houses that crowd down to the seafront, all accentuated by the tall church tower.
