The history of the Hallstatt Bone House, also known as the Charnel House or Ossuary, dates back to the 12th century and is rich in tradition and cultural practices:
Origin: The Bone House in Hallstatt, Austria, has existed since the 12th century, located in St. Michael’s Chapel in the historical center of the World Heritage city.
Skull Collection: The Bone House contains around 1200 human skulls, with 610 of them hand-painted and arranged according to individual family groups, each marked with dates of death. The tradition of recording and painting skulls began in 1720 AD when graves were reopened due to limited burial space, leading to the removal and decoration of skulls.
Continuation of Tradition: The tradition of the Bone House custom has continued into modern times, with the most recent addition in 1995 being the skull of a woman who passed away in 1983. Individuals who wish for their skulls to be placed in the Bone House can still do so.
