- Fortress Hohensalzburg - After a 2.5-hour drive, Salzburg is reached. The fortress’s iconic towers rise above the rooftops of Mozart’s city and are visible from afar. Spanning up to 250 meters in length and 150 meters in width, it stands as the largest intact fortification in Central Europe. Situated on the Festungsberg in the heart of Salzburg, the Hohensalzburg Fortress is easily accessible via the fortress railway. Several viewing terraces offer breathtaking views of the city and surrounding countryside. The oldest section of the castle boasts over 900 years of history, with its initial construction completed around 1077. Over the centuries, the Archbishops of Salzburg, who owned the fortress, continued its expansion, funded by the wealth from salt mining, known as “white gold.” Visitors can explore the fortress using the inclined elevator of the fortress railway.
- Salzburger Altstadt - MOZART Birthplace, The Hagenauerhaus, is a former residence located at Getreidegasse 9 in Salzburg’s left old town. The renowned musician and composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born here on January 27, 1756, on the third floor. During a stroll through the old town, visitors can wander through charming streets like Getreidegasse and Goldgasse and visit the Salzburg Cathedral on Residence Square.
- Salzburg Cathedral - The Salzburg Cathedral stands out in the old town with its distinctive two-tower facade and grand structure. The surrounding baroque squares create a unique setting used by the Salzburg Festival and recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The baroque architecture impresses with its clear forms, cohesive decor, and radiant facade made from local marble. Designed by Italian architect Santino Solari, it is the most significant church building of its time north of the Alps, influencing architecture throughout Austria and southern Germany. The first cathedral was inaugurated in 774 AD. Visitors can explore the cathedral’s interior and the Cathedral Square, known as “Domplatz,” with its sculptures and attractions, which serve as the backdrop for the famous Salzburg Festival.
- Mirabell Palace and Gardens - Located in Salzburg’s Right Old Town, the Mirabell Palace is a renowned tourist attraction, celebrated for its gardens. The name Mirabell is derived from the Italian words “mirabile” (admirable) and “bella” (beautiful). The Mirabell Gardens were redesigned around 1690, retaining the geometric shapes typical of the baroque style. Its visual alignment with the cathedral and fortress creates a magnificent effect while integrating it into the historic cityscape. The entire complex, including all outbuildings and horticultural monuments, is protected as a monument and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage. Admission is free.
- Schloss Hellbrunn - The final stop promises to bring joy to visitors. Hellbrunn Palace, a gem among Salzburg’s gardens, is located at the city’s outskirts. This masterpiece of Mannerist architecture is surrounded by an expansive park, trick fountains, and the Salzburg Zoo. Constructed between 1612 and 1619 by Italian architect Santino Solari, it is an architectural marvel. The trick fountains in the castle garden are a highlight, showcasing the engineering prowess of past centuries with impressive machines, fountains, and surprises that continue to entertain guests.
- Zoo Salzburg - Situated in the southern part of the city, the Salzburg Zoo spans 14 hectares and is part of the historic palace gardens of Hellbrunn Palace, bordering the Anif municipal area to the south. The zoo houses approximately 1,500 animals across 150 species. It is an option for those with extra time or who prefer visiting the zoo over another attraction. After the final stop, the journey back to Vienna takes 2.5 hours, with a possible short break for refreshments and coffee.
