Setting Sail on a Caribbean Adventure

The sun was just beginning to rise over the horizon as I made my way to the marina in San Andrés, ready to embark on a private pontoon tour that promised to be an unforgettable experience. As a former professional surfer, I’ve spent countless hours in the ocean, but there’s always something magical about exploring new waters. This time, it was the crystal-clear waters of San Andrés Bay that called to me.

Our captain for the day was Josef, a local with a warm smile and a wealth of knowledge about the area. Alongside him was his first mate, Jesus, who greeted us with a friendly wave. Although Josef’s English was limited, we managed to communicate with a mix of basic Spanish and hand gestures, which only added to the adventure. Our group was a diverse mix of ages, from a lively three-year-old to a couple in their eighties, all eager to experience the beauty of the Caribbean.

As we set off, the cooler stocked with ice-cold beers was a welcome sight, and the gentle sway of the boat was a soothing reminder of the ocean’s embrace. The water was a mesmerizing shade of blue, even at the marina, hinting at the wonders that awaited us.

Discovering the Underwater World

Our first stop was the famous “Acuario,” a natural aquarium teeming with vibrant marine life. Equipped with snorkel masks, we plunged into the warm waters, greeted by schools of colorful fish darting around us. The highlight of the dive was spotting a nurse shark gliding gracefully about 30 feet away, a thrilling sight that left us all in awe.

The plastic bridge connecting the islands added a playful element to our adventure. Its constant swaying made crossing it an exhilarating challenge, with the potential for an unexpected dip in the water. Thankfully, we all managed to stay dry, but the laughter and camaraderie shared on that bridge were unforgettable.

The flexibility of our private tour allowed us to linger longer at the Acuario, soaking in the vibrant underwater world. We decided to skip the mangroves and “Wata Wata,” opting instead to spend more time at the “Palito” sandbar, where relaxation awaited.

Arriving at the Palito sandbar, we were greeted by the sight of a lily pad foam mat floating invitingly on the water. It was the perfect spot to unwind, sip on drinks, and bask in the sun. The gentle waves lapped at the edges of the mat, creating a soothing rhythm that lulled us into a state of bliss.

The camaraderie among our group was palpable as we shared stories and laughter, the ocean breeze carrying our voices across the water. The flexibility of the private tour meant we could linger as long as we liked, savoring the moment without the pressure of a strict itinerary.

Before setting sail, we had stocked up on coconut rum from Super Jacky, a local favorite that proved to be a hit among our group. As we raised our cups in a toast to the day’s adventures, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to explore this beautiful corner of the Caribbean.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the water, we reluctantly made our way back to the marina. The day had been a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation, a reminder of the simple joys that island life has to offer.
