A visit to Palenque de Benkos Biohó is a must when in Cartagena. This renowned site in the Colombian Caribbean is a testament to African heritage in America. It marks the location of the largest black rebellion of the 17th century, led by Benkos Biohó, a combat general and prince from the Royal Family of Guinea-Bissau (formerly Portuguese Guinea). This group successfully escaped the Spanish colony in the walled city of Cartagena de Indias and established San Basilio de Palenque, the first free black territory in America. Here, African traditions, customs, and legacies continue to thrive.
