La Jolla Cove - La Jolla Cove is a small cove with a beach encircled by cliffs in La Jolla, San Diego, California. Point La Jolla forms the southern boundary of the cove. The area is protected as part of a marine reserve and is a favorite spot for snorkelers, swimmers, and scuba divers.
The swells that frequently come in from the open ocean can be large and powerful. The water temperature is often slightly cooler than the average San Diego beach. While the beach has a limited dry sand area at high tide, during very low tides, tide pools become visible at the cove.
California sea lions can be seen in the waters of the Cove and occasionally haul out, temporarily leaving the water to rest on its beaches, cliffs, and bluffs. Similar to the situation with the Pacific harbor seals at Children’s Pool Beach, there is some controversy regarding human interactions with the sea lions.
- Sunset Cliffs Natural Park - Sunset Cliffs is a prosperous coastal community within the Point Loma area of San Diego, California. It is bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the west, Ocean Beach to the north, Catalina Blvd. and Santa Barbara St. to the east, and Sunset Cliffs Natural Park to the south.
The area is named for the dramatic cliffs that line the ocean. There are surfing spots below the cliffs. The cliffside trails are popular for walking and sunset viewing, but they are undeveloped and can be hazardous. Falls from the cliffs have resulted in fatalities and injuries.
