Leave the realm of the living as you delve into the depths of the ATM Cave with a licensed guide. Recently recognized as the #1 Sacred Cave destination globally by National Geographic, the ATM cave is not only geologically stunning with its crystalline stalactites and stalagmites but also historically significant, serving as a natural museum of ancient Maya artifacts and a sacred burial site. This is the final resting place of the “Crystal Maiden,” an ancient Maya ceremonial victim, along with the remains of 13 other sacrificed individuals. Our professional guides have led government officials, National Geographic, Discovery Channel, The British High Commission, and US Embassy officials into the ATM Cave. This sacrificial site is accessible via a 45-minute drive from our office in San Ignacio.
- Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve - Upon arrival at the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve, vehicles are parked at the ranger post. From there, the journey continues on foot, with a 45-minute hike through the jungle to the cave entrance. To enter the cave, participants swim across a small spring-fed pool and wade into the dark underworld, gaining access to an extensive underground maze of tunnels, passageways, and chambers, culminating in the ceremonial chamber housing stoneware, ceramics, and the renowned crystallized skeleton of the “Crystal Maiden.”
The cave exploration lasts approximately 3 hours under the guidance of experienced guides.
Afterward, participants return to the jungle and hike back to the vehicles, where they can relax and enjoy a homemade picnic lunch with water and soft drinks before driving back to San Ignacio.
