Setting Sail to Ometepe

The sun was just beginning to rise as my wife and I made our way to the ferry at Puerto San Jorge. The anticipation of a new adventure was palpable, and the gentle lapping of the freshwater waves against the dock set the perfect tone for the day. As seasoned surfers, we’re no strangers to the ocean’s embrace, but this time, we were trading our surfboards for hiking boots and a sense of wonder.

The ferry ride to Ometepe was a journey in itself. The twin peaks of the island’s volcanoes, Concepción and Maderas, loomed in the distance, promising a day filled with exploration and discovery. Our guide, Luis, met us with a warm smile and an infectious enthusiasm that matched our own. His knowledge of the island was as vast as the ocean, and we knew we were in for something special.

Exploring the Heart of Ometepe

Our first stop was Punta Jesús María, a place where the land seems to stretch endlessly between two seas. Walking along the sandbar, with the majestic Concepción Volcano as our backdrop, was a surreal experience. The landscape was unlike anything we’d ever seen, and it was easy to lose ourselves in the beauty of it all.

Luis led us to Charco Verde, a natural reserve teeming with life. Here, we encountered howler monkeys swinging through the trees, butterflies flitting about, and even a few snakes slithering through the underbrush. Luis’s passion for the island’s flora and fauna was evident as he shared stories and insights that brought the landscape to life. It was a reminder of the interconnectedness of nature, something we surfers often feel when riding the waves.

A Refreshing Oasis

As the day wore on, we found ourselves at Playa Mangos, where a mid-day cocktail provided the perfect respite. The laid-back vibe of the beach was a familiar comfort, reminiscent of the many surf spots we’ve visited across Central America. But the true highlight of the day was yet to come.

Our final destination was Ojo de Agua, a natural spring that seemed to embody the essence of tranquility. The cool, crystal-clear waters were a welcome relief from the day’s heat, and as we floated in the spring, surrounded by lush greenery, we felt a profound sense of peace. It was the perfect way to end our adventure, leaving us with memories that would linger long after we left the island.

Ometepe is a place that captures the heart and soul of Nicaragua, and our day there was nothing short of magical. With Luis as our guide, we experienced the island in a way that was both intimate and awe-inspiring. It’s a destination that calls to the adventurer in all of us, and one that we’ll undoubtedly return to in the future.
