- Pre-Columbian Gold Museum - Situated in San José, Costa Rica, this museum is housed in an underground building beneath the “Plaza de la Cultura” and is managed by the Banco Central de Costa Rica.
The Museums of the Central Bank of Costa Rica are dedicated to managing, preserving, researching, and promoting the Archaeology, Visual Arts, and Numismatics collections. They provide visitors with permanent exhibitions and a dynamic program of temporary exhibits related to their heritage, all within a remarkable building in the heart of San José.
- San Jose - As the capital and largest city of Costa Rica, San José is also the capital of the province with the same name. It is centrally located in the mid-west of the Central Valley, within San José Canton.
- Metropolitan Church (Catedral Metropolitana) - In 1813, San José was granted city status by the Spanish Courts, necessitating a temple to honor the Catholic faith. Construction of the current metropolitan cathedral began in 1825 under Eusebio Rodríguez, who designed a longer and wider temple with masonry walls. The church was inaugurated in 1827 and became a cathedral in 1850 when Monsignor Anselmo Llorente y La Fuente was appointed the first bishop of Costa Rica.
-
Parque La Sabana - Located in downtown San José, La Sabana Metropolitan Park is the largest and most significant urban park in Costa Rica, often referred to as “the lungs of San José” by locals.
Spanning 0.72 square kilometers (0.28 sq mi), it is adjacent to the city’s core districts, providing green space and recreation for San José residents. Several key institutions and organizations are situated within or near the park. Officially inaugurated in 1977, its origins date back two centuries when Manuel Antonio Chapuí, a parish priest, donated land in the Mata Redonda District to benefit Costa Rica’s interests. Since then, the area has been used for recreation and sports. -
Mercado Municipal De Artesanias - Delight in shopping and bargaining for a vast array of beautiful handicrafts at the San Jose Municipal Handicraft Market, a maze of aisles filled with colorful souvenirs.
All items are handcrafted by genuine Costa Rican artists, offering a wide selection of jewelry, wood carvings, t-shirts, hammocks, coffee and spices, bookmarks, framed butterflies, sloth bears, and many other items. - Museo Nacional De Costa Rica - The National Museum of Costa Rica invites exploration of the cultural and natural history of Costa Ricans, from pre-Columbian times to the present.
Its exhibition rooms display diverse collections in national history, archaeology, and natural history, making it the oldest museum in the country with 135 years of history. It hosts temporary exhibitions on artistic and cultural themes and offers a varied agenda of activities throughout the year.
The Museum is housed in a landmark building, declared Historical Architectural Heritage and a symbol of Costa Rica’s abolition of the army.
If the National Theater is closed, the visit will be redirected to the National Museum.
