- San Luis Potosi - Prepare with long pants, closed shoes, sunscreen, and a hat. The journey begins with a 45-minute drive from the meeting point in San Luis Potosí’s capital city to our first tour destination: Palmar Segundo. This is the final stronghold where the guardians of MEZCAL DE CAMPANILLA maintain this tradition, an ANCESTRAL technique utilizing a distinctive clay pot system for distillation, imparting an extraordinary flavor that distinguishes it from anything previously tasted. Here, Angel, Daniel, Jesus, Jaime, Manuel, Maria de la Luz, and their families welcome us to their taberna, or mezcal patio. During the tour, we will explore the processes involved in preparing and crafting mezcal using the campanilla technique.
- Mexquitic de Carmona - We will learn the proper technique for tasting mezcal, enhancing the experience through our senses. Forget what was learned during those lively spring break nights; this spirit deserves to be appreciated in a unique manner. Remember to bring extra cash (pesos) if you wish to purchase souvenirs directly from the mezcal producers.
- Derramaderos - It’s time to return to the vehicle and continue along the route of ancestral beverages. Near the main highway, the small community of Derramaderos is nestled in a valley within the protected natural area of Sierra de San Miguelito. We will visit David and his mother Eufemia, affectionately known as La Jefa del Pulque. Together, we will hike into the stunning desert, rich with endemic cacti, to traditionally collect agave sap. Back at their home, they will demonstrate the preparation of pulque, a fermented pre-Hispanic drink similar to kombucha but with a hint of alcohol. We will take a moment to enjoy a refreshing beverage in the beautiful garden of our host’s home, a space that invites us to linger. Then, it’s time for a 40-minute drive back to the meeting point, concluding our rural tourism activity.
