Plaza de la Soledad - From the Plaza de San Francisco, we will proceed north along Benito Juárez Street to Calle de Mesons, where the temple of Our Lady of Health, built by Father Luis Felipe Neri de Alfaro, a key figure in San Miguel’s Catholic life, can be seen. After a brief overview of the temple and Father Luis Felipe Neri de Alfaro, we will head to the Oratory of San Felipe Neri, walking leisurely to appreciate the vibrant surroundings and observe local daily life.

Oratorio of San Felipe Neri - Here, we will explore the religious complex of the Oratory of San Felipe Neri, which holds great historical and cultural significance. This complex includes the Chapel of Our Lady of Health, the Chapel of the Virgin of Loreto, the Temple of San Felipe Neri, and the residence of the religious community. We will delve into the origins of the congregation, its establishment in San Miguel de Allende, and the key figures who supported it. The values that guided the congregation’s mission and its significant impact on the then Villa of San Miguel the Great will be analyzed, providing a detailed and enriching perspective on one of the city’s religious pillars, the Oratorio de San Felipe Neri.

Chapel of the Holy House of Loreto (Chapel de la Casa de Loreto) - At this important religious site, we will discuss the town’s patron saints and explore the social, spiritual, economic, and educational connections the Oratory established with the inhabitants of various castes during the 18th century. To enhance our discussion and provide a more comprehensive view of the Oratorians’ image and their significance in St. Michael the Great, we have selected two paintings and a festivity to visually illustrate the cultural and spiritual impact of the Philippians in St. Michael of Allende.

These local artists are crucial in preserving cultural and religious traditions, with their influence extending beyond what is immediately visible. Many santeros have diversified their talents by entering the vibrant mojigangas business, creating colorful and festive giant figures that enliven celebrations. Despite this commercial venture, they continue their work as healers, finding it a highly rewarding parallel activity. Travelers will have the opportunity to closely appreciate some examples of their exceptional work, allowing a deeper understanding of the richness and complexity of their art.

Templo de la Purisma Concepcion - The deep devotion to the Immaculate Conception in our community is celebrated with great enthusiasm every year. These celebrations are a time of unity and faith, characterized by a series of events that enrich our culture and spirit. The festivities include an emotional dawn marking the start of the celebrations, followed by the joy of a musical band accompanying various processions. Special masses are held, and a vibrant kermés is organized, among many other activities inviting family participation. Everyone is warmly invited to join these events and experience the rich tradition and festive atmosphere surrounding this important commemoration.

Iglesia San Rafael o Santa Escuela de Cristo - We continue with the city’s first parish complex, a place of great historical and cultural importance. This venue is not only a center of faith, housing an impressive collection of religious art, but also actively participates in the many processions held throughout the year in San Miguel de Allende. During our visit, we will explore the significant role of the santeros in the region. Many of these artists, known for their skill in creating religious images, have also successfully ventured into the mojigangas business, maintaining Santeria as a side activity they find extremely rewarding. We will have the opportunity to see some examples of their exceptional work, allowing us to appreciate the richness of their art and their contribution to local culture.
