From Surf to Saddle: A Rainforest Ride to La Fortuna Waterfall
Trading my surfboard for a saddle, I embarked on a horseback journey through San Ramon’s lush rainforests to the majestic La Fortuna Waterfall. Join me as I recount this unforgettable adventure, complete with vibrant wildlife, thrilling trails, and a refreshing dip in the waterfall’s crystal-clear pool.
Setting Off on a New Adventure
As someone who spends most of his days chasing waves and soaking up the sun, the idea of trading my surfboard for a saddle was both intriguing and a little daunting. But the promise of a horseback journey through the lush rainforests of San Ramon to the majestic La Fortuna Waterfall was too tempting to resist. My wife and I, always eager for a new adventure, decided to give it a go.
Our guide, Otto, greeted us with a warm smile and a reassuring presence. His knowledge of the area and the horses was evident from the start, and he made sure we felt comfortable and safe. The horses, calm and well-cared for, seemed to sense our excitement and were ready to lead us on this unforgettable journey.
As we set off along the trail, the vibrant flora and fauna of the rainforest enveloped us. The air was thick with the scent of tropical blooms, and the sounds of the jungle provided a rhythmic backdrop to our ride. It was a world away from the crashing waves and salty breeze I was used to, but it was a welcome change of pace.
Discovering the Magic of the Rainforest
The trail led us through reforested areas and private farms, offering glimpses of the local way of life. As we approached the Pino Blanco Waterfall lookout, the view was nothing short of breathtaking. The waterfall cascaded down the rocks, its roar echoing through the canyon.
Along the way, we were treated to a special sight—a toucan perched high in the trees, its vibrant colors standing out against the green canopy. It felt like a scene straight out of a nature documentary, and I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe at the beauty of it all.
Crossing the hanging bridge was a thrilling experience, the kind that makes your heart race and your spirit soar. The bridge swayed gently underfoot, offering a unique perspective of the forest below. It was a reminder of the wild, untamed beauty of this place, a stark contrast to the predictable rhythm of the ocean waves.
The Reward at the End of the Trail
Reaching the La Fortuna Waterfall was like stepping into another world. The hike down was challenging, especially for someone more accustomed to paddling out to sea than trekking through the jungle. But the effort was worth it. The waterfall was a sight to behold, its waters cascading into a crystal-clear pool below.
We took a moment to soak it all in, the cool mist from the waterfall a refreshing reprieve from the humid jungle air. Some of us ventured into the water for a swim, while others simply enjoyed the view from the rocks. It was a moment of pure bliss, a reminder of the simple joys that nature has to offer.
As we made our way back, we stopped at the Maleku Indian Cultural Rescue Center. It was a fascinating glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Costa Rica, a chance to learn about the traditions and beliefs of the Maleku people.
The journey ended with a thoughtful touch—fresh fruit and a granola bar, a small but appreciated gesture that left us feeling refreshed and satisfied. As we rode back to the reception area, I couldn’t help but reflect on the day’s adventure. It was a reminder that sometimes, the best experiences are found off the beaten path, away from the familiar comfort of the waves.
