From Surf to Sky: A Birdwatching Adventure in San Salvador
When the waves are calm, I seek new adventures. This time, it was a birdwatching tour in San Salvador that promised a different kind of thrill. Join me as I swap my surfboard for binoculars and explore the vibrant avian life of El Espino and El Boqueron.
A Morning with the Birds
The sun had barely begun its ascent when I found myself being whisked away from my hotel in San Salvador by Rodolfo Welsh, a maestro in the world of birdwatching. As a professional surfer, I’m more accustomed to the rhythm of the waves than the calls of the wild, but the promise of a new adventure was too tempting to resist. Rodolfo’s reputation as a bird specialist and photographer preceded him, and I was eager to see what the day had in store.
Our destination was the Jiquilisco Bay & Spider Monkey Forest, a place that sounded as exotic as it was. Rodolfo’s passion for birding was infectious, and his ability to spot birds by sound alone was nothing short of magical. With the binoculars he lent me, I was able to follow his lead and catch sight of the turquoise-browed motmot and the common squirrel cuckoo, two species I had hoped to see. The experience was akin to catching the perfect wave—rare, exhilarating, and deeply satisfying.
Discovering El Espino & El Boqueron
After a morning filled with avian wonders, I was introduced to Ricky, Rodolfo’s birding partner, who would guide me through the Ecoparque El Espino and El Boqueron. Despite their proximity to the bustling capital, these sites were teeming with life and offered a serene escape from the urban hustle.
Ricky’s talent for spotting birds by sound was impressive, and his knowledge of the local habitats and ecosystems added depth to the experience. As we wandered through the dense forests, I marveled at the diversity of species we encountered. The painted bunting and black-headed trogon were unexpected highlights, spotted even during our lunch break. It was a reminder that nature’s wonders are often found in the most unexpected places.
A New Perspective
As someone who spends most of his time chasing waves, this birdwatching tour offered a refreshing change of pace. It was a chance to slow down, to listen, and to appreciate the beauty of the natural world in a different way. The camaraderie with Rodolfo and Ricky, their shared passion for birding, and their willingness to share their knowledge made the experience all the more enriching.
Reflecting on the day, I realized that much like surfing, birdwatching requires patience, keen observation, and a deep respect for nature. It’s about being present in the moment and finding joy in the simple act of discovery. As I returned to the city, I carried with me not just memories of the birds I’d seen, but a newfound appreciation for the land and its inhabitants. For anyone visiting San Salvador, I can’t recommend this tour enough. It’s a journey into the heart of nature, guided by those who know it best. Birdwatching Adventure
