Walter Sisulu Square - In 1948, the National Party’s election victory led to the enforcement of Apartheid laws. In 1955, women took to the streets to challenge these laws, meeting with W. Sisulu to present their grievances and burn the ‘Dom Pas’. Visitors can explore the shanty settlement and interact with residents, an optional activity for those who wish to engage with the community. There is no entrance fee, but a small donation at the end of the walk is appreciated.
Today, the current South African Constitution is adopted from the then-signed FREEDOM CHARTER.

Hector Pieterson Museum and Memorial - On June 16, 1976, thousands of schoolchildren took to the streets of Soweto in protest after the government enforced Afrikaans as the medium of instruction for subjects like Mathematics, Social Studies, and History. Tragically, hundreds of children in school uniforms were shot and killed by the police, including Hector Pieterson and Hastings Ndlovu. Many children fled to exile or elsewhere for a better life, and some perished without trial. To this day, there has been no accountability.

Mandela House - Nelson Mandela once stayed in the back room of Walter Sisulu’s house before acquiring his own home in the late 1940s. This was his first owned house with Winnie until his arrest in 1963. Winnie managed the household while facing her own imprisonments, and at one point, the house was bombed by the police. It holds much of the struggle of Mandela and Winnie. After Mandela’s release from Robben Island, he lived here for eleven days before moving to a more private location due to the constant presence of people wanting to see him.

Baragwanath Medical Centre - Established in 1941 during the Second World War, the municipalities of Soweto were compelled to build a hospital to assist with casualties from the Middle East. It later became the third-largest hospital in the world, now known as Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.
