The story begins with the opening of Rick’s Cafe by its founder, Richard Hershman, in April 1974. At that time, Negril was a tranquil fishing village with minimal development. It lacked many modern conveniences such as electricity, telephones, and hot running water. The charming cliffside location was originally owned by a local doctor, the son of Jamaica’s first Governor General.
Rick’s Cafe was the first public bar and restaurant of its kind on the West End Cliffs, providing an alternative to Negril’s stunning seven-mile beach.
On September 11, 2004, Hurricane Ivan devastated Rick’s. More destructive than Gilbert, 80-foot waves crashed over the cliffs and treetops. When the waves finally subsided, Rick’s Café had been scattered across the road in fragments. Yet, despite the immense damage from Ivan, Rick’s was rebuilt once more, bigger and better than ever.
