• Temple of Demeter - Constructed between 530-520 BC, the Temple of Demeter predates the Parthenon by about a century. It was dedicated to Apollo, showcasing Demeter and her daughter Persephone. Demeter, the goddess of agriculture and fertility, inspired the temple’s location in a fertile valley near the village of Sangri.
• Limpertas Manolis Pottery - In the village of Damalas, the talented potter Manolis Libertas creates unique ceramics. This wonderful craft has been passed down through generations since the late 19th century. The workshop offers traditional kitchenware, including exquisite hulls, along with many other decorative and practical items.
• Chalkio - Situated on the Tragaia plateau in central Naxos at an elevation of 270-280 meters, Halki is a small yet distinctive village. Known for its architecture and neoclassical mansions, visitors can explore the citrus museum, sample various citrus products, and purchase this unique distillate. The village’s traditional alleys and shops offer a delightful experience.
• Filoti - Filoti is a semi-mountainous village in central Naxos, located at the base of Mount Zas at an altitude of approximately 400 meters and about 18.2 km from Chora. It is the largest village in Naxos and one of the largest in the Cyclades, comprising three settlements: Rachidi, Klefaros, and Liouri. The church of Panagia Filotitissa, a basilica built in 1718 on the site of an old Byzantine church, is a notable landmark. Filoti thrives on livestock, agriculture, and a growing tourism industry. Visitors can explore folklore museums, the church of Panagia, shops with tourist and traditional products, as well as cafes and taverns offering local meats and cheeses from free-range animals.
• Apeiranthos - Apeiranthos is a village in mountainous Naxos, 28 km from the island’s capital, situated at an altitude of 570 to 640 meters on the eastern slopes of Mount Fanari. Recognized as a traditional settlement since 1978, the village is centered around two 17th-century towers that once belonged to Frankish landowners. The Museum of Fine Arts and the Archaeological Museum, which houses artifacts from the Cycladic era of the 3rd millennium BC, are key attractions.
• Eggares Olive Press Museum - Located in the charming village of Eggares on Naxos, the Eggares Olive Oil Museum offers an engaging exploration of olive oil production’s history and cultural importance. Set in a beautifully restored traditional olive press, the museum displays ancient techniques and tools used in olive oil extraction, providing insight into the daily lives of past generations. The museum’s rich collection includes millstones, wooden presses, and traditional storage vessels, complemented by informative exhibits. Visitors can learn about the olive oil production process, from harvesting to pressing and storage, through interactive displays and hands-on activities.
• Apollonas Kouros - Near the picturesque village of Apollonas on Naxos’s northern coast, the Kouros of Apollonas is a remarkable example of ancient Greek sculpture. This massive, unfinished marble statue, thought to depict Dionysus or Apollo, remains in its original quarry, offering a fascinating look into the island’s artistic and cultural legacy. Measuring over 10 meters long and dating back to the 6th century BCE, the Kouros highlights the advanced skills of Naxian artisans and the island’s historical role in marble quarrying and sculpture. Visitors can admire the statue’s intricate details and imagine the monumental effort required to create such a work with basic tools.
