Sanjo Blacksmith Dojo - Nail Making Experience
Nails are essential for the repair and restoration of historic structures like shrines, temples, and castles. Typically, a nail with a round shaft, known as “Yokugi,” was introduced from Europe during the Meiji era. In contrast, “Wakugi,” also from the same era, features a larger surface area and a thicker, angular axis. It has been crucial to Japanese construction since the Asuka period.
Moreover, Wakugi is crafted by individually hammering each piece, resulting in slight variations in thickness. For instance, the thickness and spacing of the tearoom alcove post, and aligning the nail line, reflect the architectural dedication to space, even for a single nail, showcasing the nuanced craftsmanship.
