Galloping Through Baja: A Horseback Adventure to Remember
When the waves are calm, and the sun is shining, there’s no better way to explore Baja’s beauty than on horseback. Join me as I recount an unforgettable ride along the pristine shores of Playa La Mision, where adventure and serenity meet.
A Serendipitous Start
The sun was just beginning to peek over the horizon as my wife and I found ourselves in Santa Anita, ready to embark on an adventure that promised to be as thrilling as catching the perfect wave. We had heard whispers of the Baja Horseback Adventure and, being the nomadic souls that we are, we couldn’t resist the call of the wild. Our journey began with a warm welcome from Erin, who assured us that our ride to the ranch was all set. The drive was a scenic 45-minute journey, filled with anticipation and a hint of nervous excitement.
As we arrived at the ranch, we were greeted by Jose, Junior, and a team of majestic horses. The air was filled with the scent of adventure, and the ranch buzzed with an energy that was both calming and exhilarating. It was clear from the start that this was going to be an experience unlike any other.
Riding Through Baja’s Beauty
Once we were matched with our equine partners, we set off on a trail that wound through the vibrant La Mision estuary. The landscape was a tapestry of colors, with Great Blue Herons and Snowy Egrets adding to the picturesque scene. The rhythm of the horses’ hooves on the trail was almost meditative, a stark contrast to the adrenaline-pumping surf sessions I’m used to.
As we emerged onto Playa La Mision, the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean stretched out before us. The sun-kissed shores beckoned, and with a nod from Jose, we let the horses gallop along the beach. The wind whipped through our hair, and the sound of the waves crashing against the shore was music to my ears. It was a moment of pure, unadulterated joy, reminiscent of the first time I caught a wave.
A Heartfelt Farewell
Our ride concluded back at the ranch, where we were greeted by a chorus of friendly animals, including a charming donkey named Taquito. Junior, ever the thoughtful host, had captured our adventure in over 70 photos, each one a testament to the incredible day we had. As we sipped on margaritas and indulged in tacos, courtesy of Carlos, our taxi driver, we couldn’t help but reflect on the magic of the day.
This horseback adventure was more than just a ride; it was a journey into the heart of Baja’s beauty, a reminder of the simple joys that life has to offer. As we made our way back, my wife and I couldn’t stop talking about the experience, already planning our return with our daughters. If you’re ever in Santa Anita, don’t hesitate to saddle up and let the magic of Baja sweep you off your feet.
