• New Mexico Capitol Art Collection - This tour kicks off outside the New Mexico Capitol Art Collection building located at 415 Don Gaspar Ave, Santa Fe. If you’re not already there, it’s time to head over. To begin, position yourself so the large circular Art Collection building is on your left. Then proceed straight down Old Santa Fe Trail.

• Santa Fe Plaza - We are currently in the heart of Santa Fe Plaza. The obelisk before us is the Soldiers’ Monument, erected in 1867 to honor the Union soldiers from New Mexico who served in the Civil War. This monument has been a source of controversy for decades. • Loretto Chapel - Pause here and glance to our right. Here stands Loretto Chapel, constructed in 1878. While it may not boast as much history as the San Miguel Chapel, it has its own claim to fame: the so-called “miraculous stair.”
• The Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi - Pause here. To our right is the impressive Cathedral Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi, built in 1869. It occupies the site of a much older church that missionaries constructed in 1610. That church was destroyed in 1680, but it might have endured to this day if not for a pivotal decision in 1675.
• Santa Fe Trail End Marker - Santa Fe has long been a key destination along numerous trails through the American west. This includes the Old Spanish Trail, which links Santa Fe to the California coast, and El Camino Real, which stretches all the way from Mexico City. These ancient trails
• San Miguel Chapel - Pause here and look to the right. Do you see that simple adobe chapel with a cross on top? That’s San Miguel Chapel. And guess what? You’re gazing at the oldest church in the United States!
• Palace of the Governors - Pause here. That adobe building across from us is the Palace of the Governors, the administrative hub of Santa Fe since 1610. From here, the Spanish governed New Mexico for decades. It’s also where Po’pay set his sights when leading his Puebloan forces into the city.
• Chocolate + Cashmere - Look ahead a little, on the left side of the street. Do you see the white sign that says “chocolate + cashmere”? It marks a chic little boutique selling exactly what the name suggests… but the address itself holds a much more intriguing history.
• DeVargas Center - After Otermín’s unsuccessful attempt at reconquest, a decade of relative peace ensues. That is, until Diego de Vargas arrives on the scene. In 1692, Vargas marches on Santa Fe with only a few hundred men and a handful of cannons. But he isn’t there to fight. He offers the Puebloans a deal: If they allow Spain to reclaim control of New Mexico, they will all be granted clemency and will not face punishment for their revolt. After much deliberation, the Puebloan leaders agree.
• Fort Marcy Dog Park - Continue along the path. Remember to pace yourself if needed. We’re currently over 7,000 feet above sea level, meaning the oxygen here is much thinner than you might be accustomed to! So if you start feeling breathless, it’s perfectly fine to take a break!
• Cross of the Martyrs - Up ahead stands the Cross of the Martyrs, the most iconic feature of this park. This cross commemorates the 21 Franciscan missionaries and 380 settlers who lost their lives during the Pueblo Revolt of 1680.
