Foundations of these structures were uncovered during excavations beneath the current basilica’s floor between 1967 and 1969. As large numbers of pilgrims flocked to Assisi for the “Pardon of Assisi,” the Porziuncola’s limited space became insufficient, necessitating the construction of a church incorporating the Porziuncola. The basilica’s construction began on 25 March 1569.
