Santa Maria - Santa Maria Salt Flats
This area encompasses a protected region of 69 hectares. Established in 1830 for salt production, Santa Maria once shipped up to 30,000 tons of salt annually. - Murdeira - A quaint village on Sal Island, originally a small fishing community. It has since transformed into a private development, resulting in a seaside tourist village. Located on the west coast, it is 8 km south of Espargos, the island’s capital, and 10 km north of Santa Maria, approximately midway along the island’s main highway.
- Espargos - Known as the Viewpoint or Radar by locals, it is situated in Espargos, the island’s main city. At the city’s highest point, the viewpoint or radar offers a stunning panorama of the island, weather permitting. It’s a breathtaking view not to be missed.
- Terra Boa - The Mirage or Fata Morgana of Terra Boa is located about 4 km north of Espargos. It’s an essential stop on any itinerary. Once lush with greenery, Terra Boa is now a mini-desert with flat and mountainous landscapes to its east and west. It’s best to experience it firsthand.
- Buracona: The Blue Eye of Cabo Verde Shop - Each tour stop is awe-inspiring, but the landscape and breeze at the hole, along with the mystery of the blue eye around noon, are truly magnificent. Buracona, or Olho Azul, features a cave with a hole revealing the sea from above, known as “the love cave.” With guide approval and calm seas, visitors can dip their feet and enjoy this unique experience.
- Palmeira - Port of Palmeira
- Situated by the sea, Palmeira has been the island’s only active port since the 1960s, connecting with other islands like São Nicolau, Boa Vista, and indirectly Santiago and São Vicente. The pier offers a glimpse into the daily life of a fishing village and the warm hospitality of the locals.
Lunch
- Depending on preference, lunch can be enjoyed by the sea or while exploring the city.
- Espargos - Lunch
- For those who prefer dining in Espargos, there are numerous restaurants available for a meal.
- Pedra de Lume - Known locally as Shark Bay, Baia de Parda is a spot where small lemon sharks can be observed. To support the local economy, visitors can rent shoes for 3.00 euros and receive information from a shark bay guide. Alternatively, bringing personal footwear is an option, and more details about this stop can be shared.
- Pedra Lume Salt Crater - Salinas de Pedra de Lume is located by the sea, near a beach with stunning scenery. Within the crater of an ancient volcano, sea water infiltrates and evaporates, forming the Pedra de Lume salt pans, which give Ilha do Sal its name.
In parts of the salt flats, the high salt concentration allows visitors to float effortlessly, as the density prevents sinking.
