- Monasterio de San Martin Pinario - This monastery was established in the ninth century by Benedictine monks who settled in the city after learning about the discovery of St. James’ remains.
The current structure, dating from the late 15th century, is a magnificent example of baroque architecture, considered one of Spain’s most spectacular.
Visitors can ascend to the choir to marvel at the intricate wood-carving and admire the altarpieces by 18th-century architect Fernando de Casas Novoa.
- Portico de la Gloria - Designed as a portico or narthex of the Cathedral, this masterpiece sculpted by Maestro Mateo between 1168 and 1188 features three arches and over 200 granite figures.
- Cathedral De Santiago de Compostela - The Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela is a Catholic worship temple located in the city of the same name, in the heart of La Coruña province, Galicia.
According to tradition, it houses the tomb of the Apostle Santiago, making it one of Europe’s main pilgrimage destinations during the Middle Ages via the Camino de Santiago, a spiritual route that followed the Milky Way, connecting the Iberian Peninsula with the rest of the continent.
- Plaza del Obradoiro - Praza do Obradoiro, with its majestic Cathedral, serves as the main square of Santiago de Compostela, despite not being centrally located.
The Cathedral is Santiago’s most renowned building, featuring a Romanesque structure with later Gothic and Baroque elements.
- Hostal de los Reyes Catolicos - Construction of the Royal Hospital began in 1501 by order of the Catholic Monarchs, who visited Santiago in 1486 and recognized the need for improved healthcare for residents and pilgrims.
Today, it has been transformed into a 5-star hotel.
- Palacio de Raxoi - This neoclassical building, named after the archbishop who founded it, completed the square’s enclosure in the 18th century.
- Rúa Nova - This street showcases more examples of palaces and two of Santiago’s cultural landmarks: Teatro Principal and Salón Teatro.
- Rúa do Franco - Rúa do Franco is the old town’s premier gastronomic street. Its restaurants uphold the tradition of medieval innkeepers who catered to pilgrims. “Franks” referred to any pilgrim from beyond the Pyrenees, “free men” or the “Frankish Nation,” after whom the street is named.
- Rúa do Vilar - The Santiago Cathedral Foundation is located on this street, where pilgrims can obtain a certificate of their pilgrimage.
- Museo do Pobo Galego - This museum is dedicated to the culture and traditions of Galicia, offering a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the region’s history and heritage. (Additional cost of 4€ per person)
