Yazhou Ancient City - Insights from Yazhou Old Town on Sanya Hainan Island:
It is said that the Ancient Yazhou Wall was initially constructed with a mix of earth and grass. In 1198, during the Nan Song Dynasty (1127-1297), locals began building the walls with bricks. Yazhou served as an economic and political hub of southern Hainan from the Qin Dynasty (BC221-BC206) until October 1954, when the administrative center moved to Sanya, a fishing village.
From the Song Dynasty onward (960-1279), many renowned politicians and writers were exiled from Mainland China. During the Tang Dynasty (618-907), the famous monk Jian Zhen attempted to visit Japan five times by boat but was unsuccessful. On his fifth attempt, a typhoon diverted his group to the Ningyuan River near Yazhou. While in Yazhou, he assisted locals in rebuilding Dayuan Temple and left numerous Buddhist scriptures.
At the end of the Song Dynasty (960-1279), the notable female textile expert Huang Daopo relocated to Shuinan Village in Yazhou, where she stayed for nearly 30 years. She learned textile techniques from the locals and later returned to her hometown, Wunijing Town (now Huajing Town of Shanghai), where she shared her knowledge. Huang Daopo is revered as a pioneer of the textile industry.
