Everything you would want from a tour and much more than you would expect - Scott Edmond was our tour guide. Retired USAF, with a native born Japanese wife of 40 years he is a long time resident of Sapporo and the kindest most knowledgeable man. Very solicitous of our comfort and ability to handle the walking, the subway and bus rides that comprised the tour. Also our visit to the Ancient Onsen which is the pinnacle of the tour in addition to the Hydroelectric dam gorge. His love for Japan, its history, people and culture is apparent and profound as he shared the perspective and objective observations that only a non-native can articulate concerning his adopted home. This was not just a surface description of Hokkaido's geography, businesses, agriculture and the many sights we passed on our subway ride, our bus and walking tour to Hoheikyo Dam and lunch at a famous local curry restaurant before a relaxing visit to one of the most ancient Onsens in all of Hokkaido. This was all framed by a deep discussion of the unique history of Hokkaido island, its indigenous Ainu people, the recent and current history of political and social forces that have shaped and are currently reshaping Japanese society, and set amid a delightful one day journey from the dynamic modern City of Sapporo along a beautiful wild mountain river gorge to Jozankei. Well worth the time and money.
