Travnik is often referred to as the European Istanbul due to its oriental architecture, such as the vibrant mosque of Sultan Sulejman. On the Travnik Tour, visitors can explore the Old Town of Travnik, where the enticing aroma of Travnik’s Ćevapćići, the traditional Bosnian meatballs, fills the air. The tour also includes a visit to the home of Nobel Prize Winner Ivo Andrić, now a museum showcasing the writer’s works and belongings.
The Valley of Lašva and Travnik were renowned for their opulent structures during the Roman Empire and the Ottoman Empire. One of the most remarkable structures is the Travnik Fortress, which still stands proudly atop a hill and is visible upon entering Travnik.
The Old Fort is one of the most stunning and well-preserved medieval fortified buildings in Bosnia, with later historical periods leaving their unique marks. There are no known historical records detailing the year, duration of construction, or the builder. Historians concur that the castle was constructed in the latter half of the 14th or the early 15th century. Based on construction style and other clues, it is believed that the original builder was King Tvrtko II Kotromanić, though King Stjepan Dabiša is also considered a possible builder.
Before departing Travnik, a visit to a renowned local restaurant is planned. This establishment has been in existence for centuries and gained fame through Ivo Andrić’s book, The Travnik Chronicles. It is an excellent spot to unwind, relax, and savor a traditional coffee.
