- Savanna La Mar - Originally founded as a settlement in Spanish Jamaica, Savanna-la-Mar faced complete devastation in 1780 due to a severe hurricane, later known as the Savanna-la-Mar hurricane. The town was reconstructed because its port played a crucial role in the Atlantic trade of sugar, slaves, and other goods.
Following the abolition of slavery by Great Britain in 1833, and prior to the United States’ abolition in 1865, British officials in Caribbean colonies sometimes inspected American ships docking at their ports. They offered slaves the choice to remain in the colony and gain freedom or return to the United States and slavery. Notably, over 200 slaves achieved freedom in the cases of the Enterprise at Bermuda in 1835 and the Creole at Nassau in 1841-1842.
In a notable incident on July 20, 1855, Jamaicans intervened to help a fugitive slave gain freedom. They boarded the United States Brig Young America, docked at Savanna-la-Mar, and took the cook, Anderson (alias Nettles), ashore where he gained freedom. Anderson had boarded the ship with free papers under the name Nettles. The Jamaican magistrates did not intervene. The U.S. consul, R. Monroe Harrison (1768-1858), protested to the British colonial government and published a letter in The New York Times warning shipmasters against employing black crew members on ships visiting Jamaica, due to the risk of losing them.
- Black River - What an unforgettable day it has been so far! Now, at the Riverside Dock, after lunch, you will meet your Safari Tour Guide, board a safari boat, and drift along the Black River. Keep an eye out for crocodiles, eagles, and other wildlife in their natural habitat. The Black River is home to a variety of wildlife, including endemic bird species, crabs, and rare or endemic plants like water lilies. North American crocodiles and Tarpons also inhabit the Black River.
Prepare your cameras as your Safari Captain calls the crocodiles, feeds them chicken meat, and even pets them. Your tour guide isn’t crazy; they have a great rapport with their safari friends and are eager to share their knowledge and experience with you! You might even spot local fishers snorkeling in the river, collecting crab traps, or spear fishing among the crocodiles and other wildlife. And no, they’re not crazy either; it’s simply a way of life!
