• Wright Square - The tour kicks off at the north side of Wright Square, in front of the Gordon Monument. Participants will learn about the founding of Savannah and why General James Oglethorpe chose a 40-foot bluff for the colony. The design and purpose of the squares will also be explored. Did you know Savannah’s port is the third largest in the U.S.? Discover who Tomochichi, the Yamacraw Indian chief, was and why he is interred beneath the Gordon Monument.
• Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace Museum - Admire the birthplace of Juliette Gordon Low, founder of the Girl Scouts, born on October 31, 1860. Learn about the Gordon family’s history and the current use of the house. The tour does not enter the home but appreciates it from the outside.
• Independent Presbyterian Church - Established in 1755 on Ellis Square (formerly Market Square), the church was destroyed by fire and later rebuilt on Telfair Square, only to be destroyed by a hurricane. It now stands at Bull St and Oglethorpe Ave, built in 1855. Discover which U.S. President married here in 1885 and why the steeple is renowned today.
• Chippewa Square - Visit the spot where Forrest Gump sat with his chocolates, waiting for the bus. The monument in Chippewa Square is of General James Oglethorpe, not Captain Morgan, despite the resemblance. Learn about the man behind Savannah’s founding and the significance of his monument.
• The Old Sorrel Weed House Museum & Tours - Known as one of Savannah’s most haunted homes, the tour passes by the Sorrel Weed House. Hear about the Savannah gray brick wall surrounding the courtyard and the fingerprints in the brick. Discover the origin of this brick.
• Madison Square - Once the site of one of the American Revolution’s bloodiest battles, the Siege of Savannah, Madison Square holds significant historical importance.
• Green-Meldrim House - Completed in 1853, this house is a prime example of Gothic Architecture in the South. Costing $93,000, or $3.2 million today, it was Savannah’s most expensive home in the 1800s. It served as General Sherman’s headquarters during his March to the Sea.
• SCADstory - Originally the Savannah Volunteer Guard building, it is now owned by SCAD. The tour passes by this historic building.
• Gryphon Tea Room - Located in the Shriner’s Building, the Gryphon Tea Room is a museum in itself, once Solomon’s Apothecary, retaining original mahogany cabinetry and cubbies. It’s a favorite spot for lunch, dinner, or a relaxing tea.
• Mercer Williams House Museum - Made famous by John Berendt’s “Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil,” this house tells the true story of Jim Williams, who bought it in 1969, and the 1981 shooting of his assistant Danny. The book, a New York Times bestseller for 216 weeks, and the subsequent movie, boosted Savannah’s tourism. Reading the book or watching the movie is recommended before visiting.
• Armstrong House - Now the Armstrong-Kessler house, the tour discusses its history and current residents of this 26,000+ square foot home. It’s a breathtaking sight that prompts admiration. Although a private residence today, it remains a must-see.
• Forsyth Park - The tour concludes at Forsyth Park, which began in 1848 with 10 acres and now spans 30 acres. Known as Savannah’s Central Park, it is cherished by all ages. The Forsyth Park Fountain, a mail-order from France installed in 1858, is a must-see and perfect for photos.
