It is renowned for the Alþing (Althing), the site of Iceland’s parliament from the 10th to 18th centuries. The site features the Þingvellir Church and the remnants of ancient stone shelters. The park is situated in a rift valley formed by the separation of two tectonic plates, with striking rocky cliffs and fissures such as the impressive Almannagjá fault.
- Geysir - Haukadalur is home to hot springs, fumaroles, mud pots, and geysers, including the renowned Great Geysir and the active Strokkur. The area is distinguished by the vibrant colors of its surrounding hills, resulting from elements deep within the earth being brought to the surface by geothermal activity.
- Gullfoss Waterfall - Gullfoss (translated to ‘Golden Falls’) is one of Iceland’s most iconic and cherished waterfalls, located in the Hvítá river canyon in Southwest Iceland.
- Faxi (Vatnsleysufoss) Waterfall - Faxifoss is a stunning waterfall on the Golden Circle route, also known as “Vatnsleysufoss“. Although not as large as Gullfoss, it offers the advantage of being able to get very close to the falls. The waterfall is approximately 10 feet high and presents a straight wall of water for about 50 feet.
- Fridheimar - A country-style, family-run restaurant offering tomato-based dishes made from produce grown in onsite greenhouses.
- Kerid Crater - Kerið is around three thousand years old, making it about half the age of most volcanic calderas in Iceland. This is the primary reason why Kerið’s slopes are red in color, rather than volcanic black; the iron deposits are, geologically speaking, fresh.
