• Kerid Crater - Kerið (Volcanic Crater)

Kerið crater was formed approximately 6,500 years ago, making it about half as old as most volcanic calderas in Iceland. It is situated at the northern end of a series of craters known as Tjarnarhólar.

Kerið measures around 55 meters (180 feet) in depth, 170 meters (558 feet) in width, and 270 meters (886 feet) in circumference. It is a short and easy walk from the parking area to the crater’s edge, and visitors can take a path around the crater and descend to the clear waters of the crater lake. According to tradition, a rise in the water level here corresponds with a fall in the pond on Búrfell in Grímsnes, and vice versa.

• Gullfoss Waterfall - Gullfoss (Golden Falls)

The breathtaking and iconic Gullfoss waterfall is located on the Hvítá river, which originates from the Langjökull glacier. It is one of Iceland’s most famous attractions and a key stop on the Golden Circle Tour. The name Golden Circle is derived from the waterfall’s name, which translates to “Golden Waterfall.”

In summer, the water flow over the falls is about 140 cubic meters per second, decreasing to around 109 cubic meters per second in winter.

The thunderous sound of the water and the mist it creates provide an exhilarating experience. On sunny summer days, a rainbow often appears in the spray. Visitors should be prepared to get wet from the waterfall’s spray due to its powerful flow.

The Geysir area in Haukadalur is highly active, featuring boiling mud pools and erupting geysers. Strokkur is the most active geyser, shooting water 30 meters into the air every few minutes.

Research indicates that the Geysir area has been active for about 10,000 years.

The earliest records of hot springs at Haukadalur date back to 1294, when earthquakes altered the local landscape, creating several new hot springs.

Changes in Geysir’s activity are closely linked to seismic activity. In 1630, records show that the geysers erupted so forcefully that the surrounding valley shook.

The name “Geysir” first appeared in written sources in the 18th century. During the Age of Enlightenment, unusual natural phenomena were of great interest, leading to the term’s widespread use for similar hydrothermal features worldwide.

• Thingvellir National Park - Þingvellir (literally “Parliament Plains”) is a stunning and remarkable site of historical, cultural, and geological importance. It is located in a rift valley marking the boundary between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates.

Significant events in Iceland’s history have occurred at Þingvellir, making it a revered site for Icelanders.

Þingvellir is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

No other location better represents the history of Iceland and its people than Þingvellir by the river Öxará. The Alþingi, Iceland’s national parliament, was established at Þingvellir around AD 930 and continued to meet there until 1798.

Today, Þingvellir is a protected national shrine. According to a 1928 law, the protected area will always belong to the Icelandic nation, under the care of the Alþingi.
