Semera → Lake Afdera → Erta Ale
Afdera - Gather at Semera airport, enjoy breakfast upon arrival, and then travel to Lake Afdera, a hypersaline lake located 100 meters below sea level in Ethiopia’s Afar region. Afdera is the leading site for salt production in Ethiopia. The lake spans 140 square kilometers, has an average depth of 36 meters, and boasts a salinity of about 14%, making it so dense that, similar to the Dead Sea, sinking is impossible. Temperatures here often surpass 50°C from June to August, creating one of the harshest climates on Earth. Your guide will discuss the Afar salt economy and the communities that rely on this ancient mineral resource. A brief stop at the lake’s edge offers a tangible sense of the vastness and tranquility of one of Africa’s most extreme inland water bodies before proceeding off-road to Erta Ale.
Erta Ale - Arrive at the base of Erta Ale, a basaltic shield volcano, recognized as Ethiopia’s most active volcano and one of the Earth’s rare geological wonders. It has maintained a continuously boiling lava lake, with temperatures around 1,200°C, for over a century. Erta Ale is situated at the heart of the Afar Rift, where the African and Arabian tectonic plates are actively diverging, creating one of the few places on Earth where a new ocean is forming. A brief 20-minute hike leads you to the caldera rim. Stand at the edge to witness the swirling lava below. Your guide will explain the difference between magma and lava, and the volcanic glass formations known as Pele’s Hair and Pele’s Tears found on the crater surface.
Erta Ale → Ahmed Ela → Dallol
Danakil Depression - The adventure continues across the central Danakil Depression towards Dallol, traversing stunning desert landscapes and salt flats.
Ahmed Ela → Lake Afdera → Semera (Departure)
Afdera - Return to Lake Afdera on your final morning for a unique experience: a brief visit to the hot springs at the lake’s edge and the chance to float in the hypersaline water.
With Lake Afdera covering 140 square kilometers and situated 100 meters below sea level, the salt density in Afdera’s water makes sinking physically impossible. Your body naturally floats on the surface, akin to the Dead Sea experience.
Nearby hot springs supply warm, mineral-rich water to the lake’s edge.
This is also Ethiopia’s main salt production lake, and your guide will explain the extraction process and the Afar communities whose livelihoods depend on this remote, extreme environment before you continue the drive back to Semera Airport.
Semera - The final part of your journey offers a peaceful conclusion.

The Danakil Depression requires more than just a tour operator; it necessitates an expedition team.
This program is managed by a specialized Ethiopian ground operator whose field team ensures a dedicated water supply vehicle and portable generator are available throughout the expedition, guaranteeing hydration and safety in temperatures that often surpass 45°C. Travelers journey in a private 4WD convoy with an armed scout escort, as mandated by regional authorities.
The guide’s expertise delves deeper than the surface: discover why Erta Ale’s lava lake—one of fewer than five permanent lava lakes on Earth—exists here, why Dallol’s brine flows reach 100°C, and why Gaet’ale Pond holds the Guinness World Record as Earth’s most saline water body at 43.3% salt.
This is not mere sightseeing. It is a guided geological expedition into one of the planet’s most extreme and scientifically significant landscapes.
