Semera - Day 1: Addis Ababa – Fly to Semera, Drive to Afdera-Volcano
On this day, the operator will meet you at Semera airport, and then drive to the Danakil Depression. The journey begins early with a drive to Lake Afdera, a salt lake situated in the heart of the Danakil Depression. Here, you may have the opportunity to experience natural hot springs and enjoy a swim in the lake. Following this, the drive continues to Dodom, located at the base of Erta Ale. Departure is after lunch, around 1:30 PM. After passing several small hamlets scattered throughout this desert landscape, Dodom is approximately 9.5 km from Erta Ale, requiring about an hour of trekking. An early dinner is planned around 5:00 PM. Camels will transport all camping materials and some food (including sleeping materials like light mattresses, mats, and water) to the volcano’s rim, where the night will be spent observing the dramatic activity of the boiling lava. The Danakil Depression (Dallol and Erta Ale) is considered one of the most captivating and physically demanding natural attractions in Ethiopia.

Afdera - Day 2: Erta Ale-Hamad Ela-Dallol-Afdera
On this day, after an early breakfast, the drive to Hamad Ela begins at 4:30 AM. Hamad Ela is a more developed village with a population of about 500 people. You will witness numerous camel caravans and enjoy the sunset view from the very shallow salt Lake Assale.

Day 3: Afdera-Semera-Addis Ababa-Departure

On this day, there is another opportunity to witness the stunning sunrise over Lake Afdera. After breakfast, the drive to the town of Semera will commence, where you will be dropped off at the airport for your departure.

Take a journey through the Danakil, beginning from the Afar capital, Semera (590km away from Addis Ababa), utilizing the daily flights offered by Ethiopian Airlines. The Danakil is a real venture spot. A decent road of 350km from Semera to Mekele via Afdera has been established, but tracks to Dallol and Do Dom (for Erta Ale) necessitate 4×4 vehicles and navigational proficiency. It is advisable to explore the region with a professional operator, utilizing at least two 4x4s and employing staff who are familiar with the local Afar. Helicopters to the region can be accessed from Mekele. We presently provide tours directly from Semera. A complete tour requires a minimum of two nights, with one night each spent at Hamed Ela and on the Erta Ale rim. For a daytime viewing of the crater and a visit to Lake Afdera, additional nights at Erta Ale are advisable.
