It served as a crucial fortress protecting Lazika (modern Mingrelia) from Sasanian, Persian, and Iberian (East Georgian/Kartlian) invasions. During the war of AD 540-562, the Persians’ inability to capture Nokalakevi-Archaeopolis from the Byzantines and the Laz ultimately led to their loss of control over Lazika.
