Shanghai’s Promenade: The Bund – Pudong Skyline – Shanghai Tower – Yu Garden
The Bund (Wai Tan) - Guests are picked up from their hotel lobby in Shanghai at 9:00 A.M. to visit The Bund, Shanghai’s most popular attraction. This waterfront area is a protected historical district in central Shanghai, featuring buildings and wharves along Zhongshan East No.1 Road. The promenade offers a close-up view of the beautiful old colonial buildings from the former Shanghai International Settlement. On one side of the Huangpu River are high-tech futuristic skyscrapers, while the other side showcases 19th-century colonial architecture. The Bund provides the best views of the Pudong Skyline, with its modern megatall skyscrapers, and is an ideal spot for capturing photos of the Oriental Pearl Tower. The Bund is stunning both day and night.
Oriental Pearl Tower (Dongfang Mingzhu) - This iconic landmark offers an alternative choice for panoramic views of Shanghai from a tall building. Visitors can choose between the Shanghai Tower or the Oriental Pearl Tower. The best photos of the Oriental Pearl Tower can be taken from The Bund.
Bund International Architecture Exhibition - The western-style buildings are well-preserved by the Chinese government, with over 50 structures on the west bank of the Huangpu River. The Peace Hotel is a highlight.
Riverside Promenade (Bingjiang Da Dao) - A stroll along the waterfront promenade on The Bund is a must in Shanghai. It offers the best view of “old” Shanghai with colonial European architecture on the near side and “new” Shanghai with ultra-modern Chinese architecture on the far side of the river, showcasing the architectural contrast.
The Bund City Sculptures - Several sculptures adorn The Bund, including a large bronze bull on “Chinese Wall Street,” inspired by the one on Wall Street in New York City.
Heping Fandian - The Peace Hotel is a distinctive historic building, a living museum of a bygone era, and worth visiting to see its interior.
Nanjing Lu (Nanjing Road) - The Peace Hotel is located at the intersection of Nanjing Lu and Zhongshan East No.1 Road on The Bund.
Huangpu River - A landmark of Shanghai, the Huangpu River divides the city into Pudong and Puxi. A stroll along the river at The Bund is a must-do activity in Shanghai.
Pudong New Area - The latest development in Shanghai, Pudong New Area includes the Oriental Pearl Tower, Shanghai Tower, Shanghai World Financial Center, and many shops, embodying modernity in every sense.
Shanghai Tower - One of the most thrilling experiences in Shanghai is enjoying a panoramic view from the top of a tall building. Visitors can choose between the Shanghai Tower and the Oriental Pearl Tower. The Shanghai Tower boasts the world’s highest observation deck (1,844 feet or 562 meters). From the top, visitors can see other megatall skyscrapers below them. The Shanghai Tower is the tallest building in China and the third tallest in the world, with 128 stories and a height of 2,073 feet (632 meters). However, the views are best on clear days, so it’s advisable to visit on a day without mist or fog.
Shanghai World Financial Center - Located near the Shanghai Tower and not far from the Oriental Pearl Tower, visitors will pass by this tall building and can take great close-up photos if they choose to visit the Shanghai Tower.
Old Town (Nanshi) - Featuring fantastic old buildings and great shopping, with food places lining the laneways beneath historic buildings. Visitors can find plenty of food, drinks, clothes, and souvenirs here.
Yu Garden (Yuyuan) - Yu Garden showcases exquisite examples of traditional landscaping. Its intricate architecture, tranquil ponds, and lush greenery transport visitors to a different era. Strolling through zigzag bridges, rockeries, and pavilions offers a peaceful escape from the urban hustle and bustle. Visitors can see old Chinese architecture refurbished into shophouses, eateries, and souvenir shops.
Shanghai Museum (Shanghai Bowuguan) - This museum focuses on ancient Chinese history and art, featuring permanent exhibitions of porcelain vases, ancient seals, jades, scrolls, classical Chinese furniture, figurines, and more. The paid audio guide for this museum is included in the tour. Today’s tour concludes around 5:00 P.M.
South Bund Soft Spinning Material Market – Shanghai Propaganda Poster Art Centre – Former French Concession
Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall - The tour begins at 9:00 A.M. with a visit to the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall. The exhibition illustrates how Shanghai evolved from a fishing village to a city of 30 million people and an international financial and trade capital. It covers planning, construction, and development, highlighting its importance in minerals, business, and more. A huge model of the city is featured.
South Bund Soft Spinning Material Market - China is a major exporter of clothing due to its affordable, high-quality products. Many big clothing brands have factories in China. The South Bund Soft Spinning Material Market is ranked as the No.2 most popular attraction in Shanghai on Tripadvisor. It’s worth exploring this clothing market shopping mall.

Shanghai Propaganda Poster Art Centre - This small museum, tucked away inside a building with little signage, is a fascinating place that conserves Chinese history well. It houses a collection of around 6,000 posters. Speaking with the owner, Mr. Yang, enhances the experience. At the end of the tour, guests are dropped off at their hotel.
Former French Concession - Visitors can see interesting old architecture, remnants from the French concession period. Streets and alleys resemble the south of France, with a relaxed atmosphere. The Classical Gardens of Suzhou - These gardens in Suzhou, Jiangsu, are on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Dating back to the 6th century BCE, they were inspired by royal hunting gardens built by the King of the State of Wu. Private gardens emerged around the 4th century, reaching their peak in the 18th century. Today, over 50 gardens remain, many built by scholars, featuring landscapes mimicking natural scenery with pavilions and pagodas. Visitors will explore a couple of the best classical gardens: Humble Administrator’s Garden and Master-of-Nets Garden.
Humble Administrator’s Garden - The largest and most famous classic garden in Suzhou, known for its exquisite beauty, artistic value, and historic significance, making it one of China’s four most famous gardens.
Pingjiang Road - An old traditional commercial street with quaint alleys, traditional souvenirs, and a picturesque canal with ancient stone bridges. Visitors can experience the old Suzhou and its laid-back atmosphere.
Master-of-Nets Garden - A UNESCO World Heritage site, this peaceful and tranquil garden demonstrates Chinese garden designers’ skills in synthesizing art, nature, and architecture to create unique metaphysical masterpieces.

Highlights include Bai Causeway, Su Causeway, Three Pools Mirroring the Moon, Guo’s Garden, and more.
Three Pools Mirroring the Moon - The top sight among West Lake’s scenic spots, featuring four pools. Just off the southern side are three small pagodas, each about 2m high. During the moon festival, lighted candles are placed in these pagodas, reflecting on the water and mirroring the moon.
Su Causeway - In 1089, Su Shi, a famous Song litterateur and then mayor of Hangzhou, launched a West Lake dredging project. A byproduct was a 2.8-kilometer (1.74 miles) long embankment built with silt from the lake. Named Su Causeway in his honor, it’s ideal for a relaxed walk, with lush greenery and enchanting vistas like arching bridge reflections and majestic pagodas. These charming scenes have poetic Chinese names.
Fei Lai Feng - Visitors can see various statues embedded in the stone, walking along a path beneath them or on a larger road set back to appreciate the scale and multiplicity of carved statues. Several historically fascinating temples are within this park, including Hangzhou Yongfu Monastery and the famous Lingyin Temple.
Lingyin Temple - One of China’s largest and wealthiest Buddhist temples, founded in 328 AD, though destroyed and rebuilt 16 times. During the Five Dynasties period (907–960), about 3,000 monks lived here. At the end of the tour, guests take the bullet train back to their hotel in Shanghai.
