Shanghai People’s Square is centrally located in Shanghai, marking the division between East Nanjing Road and West Nanjing Road. It is a vibrant area for exploration.
Before 1949, the site of Shanghai People’s Square and the People’s Park was a renowned horse racetrack, established in 1861 and celebrated as the ‘No.1 Racetrack in the Far East’. Visitors can still see the remnants of the former main building in the northeast part of People’s Square.
The tour will include many attractions around People’s Square, such as the new Municipal Government Mansion, Shanghai Museum, Shanghai Grand Theater, Shanghai History Museum, and the Urban Planning Exhibition Hall. - Shanghai History Museum - Located in the People’s Square area, the Shanghai History Museum is a large museum dedicated to the local history of Shanghai, spanning from ancient times to the modern era. Visitors can view over 400 cultural relics that showcase Shanghai’s 6000-year civilization.
-
Shanghai Great World Amusement Park - This building was once the epicenter of nightlife in Shanghai. Da Shi Jie was a popular spot in the foreign settlement area of Shanghai, attracting crowds eager to see novelties and enjoy themselves. The first floor still features “magic mirrors” imported from the Netherlands many decades ago. Some shows continue to this day, showcasing everything from beautifully woven carpets in Xinjiang to cave paintings in Ningxia, and a variety of skilled artisans displaying their crafts.
Behind this building is a street filled with delightful eateries, perfect for a quick meal. The group will have lunch nearby before proceeding to the next destination.
In the afternoon, the group will explore local markets, Xintiandi, the Former French Concession, and other lively areas frequented by locals.
- Bird And Flower Market (South Xizang Road) - The tour begins at the intersection of Tibet Road and Fangbang Road, in one of Shanghai’s many antique neighborhoods, also known as the cricket market. It is filled with flowers, bonsai, birds, fish, insects, and bustling crowds searching for their desired items. It offers a glimpse into the local lifestyle.
-
Former French Concession - Known for its tree-lined streets and a unique blend of Chinese and Western architectural styles, the Former French Concession is one of Shanghai’s most charming areas. It is popular with locals, expats, and visitors, and is home to numerous attractions, as well as trendy cafes, restaurants, bars, clubs, boutiques, galleries, and museums.
Contrary to the modern, crowded, and busy metropolis with skyscrapers, this area is quiet and leisurely, featuring many European-style villas and buildings from the early 20th century. It is an excellent place to learn about the city’s history and unique beauty, offering a peaceful escape from the bustling city. - Xintiandi - Xintiandi is a tourist attraction that preserves the historical and cultural features of Shanghai while integrating Chinese and Western culture. It is divided into northern and southern parts, with the south dominated by modern architecture and the north by Shikumen old buildings. Comprising Shikumen and modern architectural styles, it has become a popular and fashionable pedestrian street in the city center. It represents the leisurely lifestyle of the city’s new generation, with outdoor cafes, bars, and romantic restaurants scattered throughout.
- Shikumen Museum, Shanghai - This museum is housed in an old Shikumen house built in the 1920s, which has been preserved and renovated. The museum is modeled after a 1920s household, featuring seven main exhibition rooms: the guest room, study room, old people’s room, master room, daughter room, pavilion room, and oven room. The story of a Shikumen family is woven throughout the visit, showcasing the unique Shikumen architectural culture of Shanghai and recreating the living space and lifestyle of Shanghai residents of that era.
- Shanghai Tower - As the new landmark of Shanghai, the Shanghai Tower is the tallest building in the city, standing at 632 meters. The 118th floor features an indoor observation deck, the world’s highest, known as the ‘Top of Shanghai Observatory’. Visitors are encouraged to first explore the exhibition hall on floor B1, then take the express elevator to the 118th floor in just 55 seconds, with speeds reaching 18 meters per second. From here, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of Shanghai, admire the scenery on both sides of the Huangpu River, and enjoy a coffee or tea on the 119th floor. If the weather permits, there may be an opportunity to witness a spectacular sunset.
-
Yuyuan Old Street - Historically known as Miaoqian Dajie, Shanghai Old Street is a historic business street that combines tourist attractions, shops, entertainment, and cultural exhibits. Its special social attractions and rich commercial background stem from being home to the city’s earliest bank, gold shop, jeweler’s store, wine shop, and tea house. Exploring the old alleys of Shanghai is a wonderful way to discover the city’s traditional culture and experience the authentic life of the Shanghainese.
Visitors can walk to the Zigzag Nine Bend Bridge, which is believed to bring good luck due to the auspicious symbolism of the number nine in Chinese culture. The bridge leads to the Mid-Lake Pavilion Teahouse, the oldest teahouse in Shanghai.
Afterwards, the group will return to the hotel using public transportation. Cherish the memories and bid farewell at the hotel.
