- Zhujiajiao Ancient Town - Situated in the suburbs of Shanghai, Zhujiajiao is a renowned ancient water town in China, boasting a history of over 1700 years. Also known as Pearl Stream, it is the best-preserved among Shanghai’s four ancient towns. Zhujiajiao is linked by 36 exquisite bridges of various shapes and styles, ranging from wooden to stone to marble. Fangsheng Bridge is the longest, largest, and tallest stone bridge. Lang Bridge, also called Huimin Bridge, is the only wooden bridge and the most distinctive span in the town. North Street is lined with representative ancient buildings from the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Kezhi Garden offers beautiful scenery and a tranquil atmosphere. In the artificial hill area, there is a magnificent five-story building topped with a diametric pavilion named Moon View Pavilion. Historical buildings such as rice shops, banks, spice stores, and even a Qing dynasty post office can still be found.
- Chenghuang Miao (Yuyuan Garden) - Chenghuangmiao is a delightful place built in a traditional Chinese architectural style, featuring numerous shops, bars, and restaurants.
- Shanghai Xiaotaoyuan Mosque - Located on Xiaotaoyuan Street in southern Shanghai, the Xiaotaoyuan Mosque, also known as the Xicheng Mosque, is one of Shanghai’s notable mosques. Established in 1917 and rebuilt in 1925, it showcases Islamic architectural style. Inside the gate is a rectangular courtyard. On the west side stands the great prayer hall, covering 500 square meters and accommodating 200 worshippers. The prayer hall has two stories, with a central vault dome and a minaret on top. A three-story hall building is on the eastern side of the courtyard, housing a library and reading room on the second and third floors, and a sermon room on the first floor. The southern side of the courtyard contains the Imams’ rooms and a reception room.
- The Bund - The Bund is Shanghai’s iconic waterfront, stretching 1.6km (1 mile) along the west shore of the Huangpu River. Originally a muddy towpath for riverboats, the Bund became the site where foreign powers, entering Shanghai after the Opium War of 1842, built their distinctive Western-style banks and trading houses. From this point, Shanghai evolved into Asia’s leading city in the 1920s and 1930s, becoming a cosmopolitan and thriving commercial and financial hub. Many of the impressive colonial structures seen today date from that prosperous era and are now an integral part of Shanghai’s cityscape. Notable colonial-era buildings on the Bund include the former British Consulate, Customs House, former HSBC Building (the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation), former Shanghai Club (now the Waldorf Astoria Hotel), and the Peace Hotel.
- Huangpu River - The Huangpu River is a 113-kilometer-long river flowing through Shanghai. It is the last major tributary of the Yangtze before it empties into the East China Sea. The Huangpu River serves as Shanghai’s shipping artery to both the East China Sea and the mouth of the Yangtze River, which it joins 29km (18 miles) north of downtown Shanghai. It also acts as a dividing line between two Shanghais: east and west, past and future. On its western shore, the colonial landmarks of the Bund remind us of Shanghai’s 19th-century efforts to reclaim a waterfront from the Huangpu River’s bogs; on the eastern shore, the steel-and-glass skyscrapers of the Pudong New Area signal a burgeoning financial empire of the future. Besides offering a privileged view of the bridges spanning the Huangpu River, the cruise boats also provide an excellent view of the famous colonial-era buildings that make up the Bund.
- Nanjing Lu (Nanjing Road) - The 3.4-mile-long Nanjing Road begins at the Bund in the east and is Shanghai’s main shopping street, as well as one of the busiest shopping streets globally. As a result of the Opium War (1839-1842), Shanghai was opened to the West as a port, leading to the importation of large quantities of foreign goods, and Nanjing Road became Shanghai’s earliest shopping street. Over time, Nanjing Road has been restructured and significantly transformed. For shopping convenience, its eastern end features an all-weather pedestrian arcade. Today, over 600 businesses on Nanjing Road offer countless famous brands, superior quality, and new fashions. KFC, McDonald’s, Pizza Hut, and other world-renowned food vendors line both sides of the street. Upscale stores include Tiffany, Mont Blanc, and Dunhill.
