Zhouzhuang, situated between Shanghai and Suzhou, is an ancient town in Kunshan city, Jiangsu province, known for its abundance of rivers and lakes. It is widely regarded as the finest water town in China. With a history spanning over 900 years, many of its houses were constructed during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Approximately 100 houses feature courtyards, and 60 of them boast arch gateways crafted from carved bricks.
After a 1.5-hour drive, visitors will reach Zhouzhuang Water Town. The tour begins with a walk to the double bridge, famously depicted in an oil painting by Chen Yi Fei, which brought fame to the town. The next stop is Zhang’s Residence, one of the few remaining Ming Dynasty structures. Originally built by a relative of one of the Ming founders, it was later acquired by the Zhang family. Now owned by the local government, it has been carefully restored. The residence spans 70 rooms and is notable for its Ming-style columns. A river flows through the complex, allowing boats to pass.
The following destination is Shen’s Residence, constructed in an aristocratic style during the early Qing Dynasty. This expansive palace covers nearly 2,000 m2 (21,500 sqft) and is the largest residence in the town. It comprises over 100 rooms surrounding seven courtyards and is divided into three sections: the water gate and wharf; the Tea and Main Halls for receiving guests and hosting important ceremonies; and the living quarters.
A boat ride along the canals offers a different perspective with each turn. Visitors may have time to sample local snacks or hone their bargaining skills in local shops before the return journey.
