Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira Camp 1

Moir Hut to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

From the Shira Plateau, the path continues east up a ridge, passing the junction towards Kibo’s peak. The route then shifts southeast towards Lava Tower, known as the “Shark’s Tooth.” Shortly after, the second junction is reached, bringing the group near Arrow Glacier at 16,000 ft. The descent continues to Barranco Hut at 13,044 ft. Despite ending the day at the same elevation as it began, this day is crucial for acclimatization, aiding in preparation for the summit day.
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Mount Kilimanjaro - Elevation (ft): 13,044 ft to 13,106 ft; Distance: 5 km; Hiking Time: 4-5 hours; Habitat: Alpine Desert. The initial challenge is climbing and scrambling over the volcanic rock of the 1,200 ft Barranco Wall. Upon reaching the top, a well-deserved lunch break is enjoyed, along with stunning views of Barafu and Mount Meru. The journey continues across ridges and valleys to the Karanga Valley campsite. This shorter day is designed for acclimatization.
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Mount Kilimanjaro - Elevation (ft): 13,106 ft to 15,331 ft; Distance: 4 km; Hiking Time: 4-5 hours; Habitat: Alpine Desert. After breakfast, the group departs Karanga, reaching the junction connecting with the Mweka Trail. The ascent continues to Barafu Hut. At this point, the Southern Circuit is completed, offering views of the summit from various angles. Here, camp is set up, rest is taken, an early dinner is enjoyed, and preparations for the summit day are made. The peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo are visible from this location.
Barafu Camp to Uhuru Point to Mweka Hut
Mount Kilimanjaro - Elevation (ft): 15,331 ft to 19,341 ft to 10,065 ft; Distance: 17 km; Hiking Time: 11-14 hours; Habitat: Arctic. In the early morning (midnight), multiple layers of clothing are donned to begin the climb to the summit. The route heads northwest, ascending through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. This section is the most mentally and physically demanding part of the trek. At Stella Point (18,600 ft), a short rest is taken, rewarded with a magnificent sunrise. From Stella Point, only one more hour remains to reach the summit. At Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the African continent is achieved. Faster hikers may witness the sunrise from the summit. The descent continues straight down to the Mweka Hut campsite, with a stop at Barafu for lunch. Mweka Camp is located in the upper forest. Later in the evening, the last dinner on the mountain is enjoyed, followed by a well-earned sleep.
Mweka Camp to Moshi
Mount Kilimanjaro - Elevation (ft): 10,065 ft to 5,380 ft; Distance: 10 km; Hiking Time: 3-4 hours; Habitat: Rain Forest. After breakfast, the descent continues to the Mweka Park Gate to receive summit certificates. At lower elevations, conditions may be wet and muddy. From the gate, the journey continues for another hour to Mweka Village. A vehicle awaits at Mweka Village to transport the group back to the hotel in Moshi.

The route begins its approach to Mount Kilimanjaro from the west, starting with a lengthy drive from Moshi to Londorossi Gate. From this point, the initial two days involve trekking through the rainforest to reach Shira Ridge. The Lemosho route traverses the entire Shira Plateau from west to east, offering a pleasant and relatively flat hike. The trail remains uncrowded until it converges with the Machame route near Lava Tower.
