Hotel to Mti Mkubwa Camp

Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 2 Camp
Kilimanjaro National Park - After breakfast, the journey continues as the trail gradually becomes steeper, entering the giant heather moorland zone. After crossing several streams, the path continues over the Shira Ridge, past Shira 1 camp, and onward to Shira 2 camp on moorland meadows by a stream.

Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp
Kilimanjaro National Park - From the Shira Plateau, the route continues east up a ridge, passing the junction towards Kibo’s peak. The direction then changes to the South East towards the Lava Tower, known as the “Shark’s Tooth” (elev 4650m/15,250ft). Shortly after the tower, the second junction leads to the Arrow Glacier. The path then descends to Barranco Camp. Although the day ends at a similar elevation as it began, this day is crucial for acclimatization and will aid in preparing for summit day.

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Kilimanjaro National Park - After breakfast, the journey continues from Barranco up a steep ridge along the Barranco Wall to the Karanga Valley and the junction connecting with the Mweka Trail.

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Kilimanjaro National Park - The trek continues up to Barafu Camp. The South Circuit is completed here, offering views of the summit from various angles. Camp is set up here, where rest, dinner, and preparation for the summit day take place.

Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka Camp
Kilimanjaro National Park - In the early morning hours (midnight to 2 am), the ascent to the summit continues between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. The path heads northwest, ascending through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most mentally and physically demanding part of the trek. At Stella Point, a short rest is taken, offering the most magnificent sunrise imaginable. Faster hikers may witness the sunrise from the summit.
From Stella Point, snow may be encountered all the way on the 1-hour ascent to the summit. Upon reaching Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the African continent is achieved!

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to Hotel
Kilimanjaro National Park - After breakfast, the descent continues to the Mweka Park Gate to receive summit certificates. At lower elevations, conditions may be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles are helpful. Shorts and t-shirts are likely sufficient (keep rain gear and warmer clothing accessible).
An African Trek & Travel vehicle will be waiting at Mweka gate to transport you back to your hotel in Moshi (approximately 60 minutes).
