- Pyramids of Giza - The Giza Pyramid Complex, also known as the Giza Necropolis, is situated on the Giza Plateau in Greater Cairo, Egypt. This iconic archaeological site features the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Pyramid of Khafre, the Pyramid of Menkaure, the Great Sphinx, and the surrounding pyramid complexes. These extraordinary structures were constructed during Egypt’s Fourth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom, around 2600–2500 BC. Besides the pyramids, the site includes ancient cemeteries and the remains of a workers’ village that facilitated the monumental construction.
Located at the edge of the Western Desert, the complex is about 9 kilometers west of the Nile River in Giza and roughly 13 kilometers southwest of downtown Cairo. Along with the nearby ancient capital of Memphis, the area was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.
- Sphinx of Memphis - The Great Sphinx of Giza is the most famous of its kind. Carved directly from the bedrock during the 4th Dynasty (circa 2613–2494 BC), it is also the oldest known sphinx in Egypt. In ancient Egyptian symbolism, sphinxes depicted the pharaoh with the body of a lion, serving as a powerful symbol of royal strength and authority.
- The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities - The Egyptian Museum is the oldest archaeological museum in the Middle East and houses the world’s most extensive collection of Pharaonic artifacts. Its exhibits cover a wide timeline, from the Predynastic Period to the Greco-Roman era.
The museum’s architectural design was chosen through the first-ever international competition of its kind in 1895, won by French architect Marcel Dourgnon. Officially opened in 1902 by Khedive Abbas Helmy II, the museum has since become a significant cultural and historical landmark in downtown Cairo, displaying some of the most remarkable treasures of ancient Egypt.
