- Kotoku-in (Great Buddha of Kamakura) - Kamakura Daibutsu (30-minute visit).
The Great Buddha of Kamakura is a bronze statue of Amida Tathagata, situated in the Kotoku-in Temple of Pure Land Buddhism in the historic city of Kamakura. Known as the Great Buddha of Kamakura, it serves as a symbol of Kamakura’s ancient capital. Unlike the Great Buddha of Nara Todaiji Temple, which has undergone numerous restorations over the years, the Great Buddha of Kamakura has preserved its original form, making it exceptionally valuable.
Minamoto Yoritomo founded the first samurai government in Kamakura - the Kamakura Shogunate (1192-1333). Over 140 years, Kamakura, as Japan’s center at the time, saw significant advancements in politics, economy, culture, and more. During the Edo period, with the resurgence of shrines and temples, Kamakura gradually became a favored tourist destination in Japan.
- Enoshima - Enoshima (approximately 110 minutes)
The origin of Enoshima is said to date back to April of the 13th year of Emperor Chinmei’s reign (552), when sand began to emerge from the sea floor, forming a sandy island after 21 days. During the Edo period, it became a popular sightseeing spot for people from Edo (now Tokyo) and has also hosted Kabuki actors.
Eshima Shrine
Eshima Shrine was founded by Emperor Kinmei in 552. The annual festival occurs in early April. The shrine houses the colorful wooden Eight-Armed Bensaiten Seated Statue, the Hizen Kuni Fujiwara Masahiro Sword, the Octagonal Gazing Turtle, the Origin of Eshima, and the Bronze Torii Gate, all of which are nationally recognized cultural treasures. Benzaiten, the God of Wealth, attracts many worshipers and tourists. The money-laundering White Dragon King even claimed that washing coins in the water here can bring prosperity.
- Hachimangu Shrine - Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine (70-minute visit)
Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, formerly known as Kamakura Hachimangu Shrine, was constructed during the Kamakura Shogunate period (1192-1867) and serves as the central belief and protector of warriors. It has a strong connection with Kamakura’s first shogun and is renowned in the Kanto region. The three major Hachimangu Shrines in Japan include the Ishikimizu Hachimangu Shrine in Kyoto and the Usa Hachimangu Shrine in Oita Prefecture, collectively known as the “three major Hachimangu Shrines.”
- Mount Fuji - Standing at 3776 meters, Mount Fuji is Japan’s tallest mountain. Its nearly perfect volcanic shape has been revered as a sacred mountain and has gained immense popularity among artists and the general public over the centuries.
Mount Fuji is an active volcano, with its most recent eruption occurring in 1707. It is located on the border between Yamanashi and Shizuoka prefectures and is visible from Tokyo and Yokohama on clear days.
