A Journey Behind Bars: Our Family Adventure at Shrewsbury Prison

The Arrival and First Impressions

Our family has always been drawn to historical sites, and the Shrewsbury Prison Tour promised an experience unlike any other. Nestled in the heart of Shrewsbury, this former Georgian prison, with its rich history dating back to 1793, beckoned us with the allure of its storied past. As we approached the imposing structure, the excitement was palpable. The kids were eager to explore, and my wife and I were curious to see how the prison’s history would be brought to life.

The Escape Room Challenge

One of the highlights of our visit was participating in “The Hole” escape room experience. Although initially designed for adults, we decided to give it a try as a family. We were then led to our cell, handcuffed together, and had bags placed over our heads to heighten the suspense.

Once inside the escape room, the challenge was immediate. In the pitch-black darkness, we had to locate a flashlight to begin solving the puzzles. It was a test of teamwork and communication, and while it proved challenging, it was also incredibly rewarding. The kids were thrilled to contribute their ideas, and we all shared a sense of accomplishment when we finally cracked the code. The laughter and camaraderie we experienced made it a memorable family bonding activity.

Exploring the Prison Grounds

After our escape room adventure, we took the opportunity to explore the rest of the prison at our own pace. The self-guided tour was a treasure trove of information, with detailed information boards and audio descriptions that painted a vivid picture of life behind bars. The kids were particularly fascinated by the stories of past inmates and the evolution of the prison system over the centuries.

The interactive elements continued to engage us, with opportunities to take photos and immerse ourselves in the history of the site. The staff were always on hand to answer questions and provide additional insights, enhancing our understanding of the prison’s significance.
