The Beauty of Cruising the Whitsundays. - On Good Friday 3rd April my wife and I joined 4 friends for the 10 hour cruise on the catamaran Camira to Whitsunday Island for a 3 hour excursion which included walking to the 3 lookouts and to the Beach for snorkelling. Sadly the weather was poor and ocean conditions rough so that was challenging for anyone who suffered sea sickness. ADVICE. Take your seasick pills. Standouts were the incredible staff who were so professional and personable, the food and drink courtesy offerings and the general beauty of the area. Big shoutout to Annie our group host on the island. She was a young superstar looking after us. Also Harrison for the fun he provided on the boat microphone. Our Captain was very experienced and engaging. Totally recommend the experience. Easy 5 Stars

unforgettable experience seeing the fabulous barrier reef. - Wonderful day, everything provided for scuba diving, snorkelling with all care, instruction and supervision attended to. Time to enjoy all on the full day. Windy but safe passage over the water. Lunch and morning/afternoon tea adequate.

Highly recommended. Amazing day! - Excellent day out with the Explore team. Well organised, lovely team (special thanks to Mack, Lockie and Adam for keeping a watchful eye on us and the reef- the team were vigilant about spotting anyone getting too close to a turtle or were seen diving too deep, close to the coral).
We visited two sites at Bait Reef, both incredible but definitely more fish and healthy coral at the second site. But both were amazing. We saw reef sharks, turtles plus an abundance of fish and coral species. An amazing experience and a real honour to be so close to this protected natural area.
The food was great, the boat clean, equipment good too. The boat wasn’t over crowded and the overall experience was one to remember.
Thank you explore team!

Snorkel the Great Barrier Reef with Explore - Originally I did not choose this Explore Snorkel tour from Airlie Beach because of the 3 hour boat trip to the reef, even though I thought it would be amazing to snorkel the Great Barrier Reef.
I ended up on it anyway after the tour I picked with Red Cats (this included Whitehaven beach and snorkeling) was suddenly cancelled 40 minutes after being kept waiting at the marina to board the boat. I am so pleased I managed to get a seat on the Explorer the following day. The coral reef is amazing with spectacular assortment of reef fish. Well worth the extra time to travel out to the great barrier reef. A well organized tour, all the staff absolutely brilliant. The 3 hours trip included a pick up from Hamilton Island, so we passed close to Whitehaven beach for a view. The boat was large, very comfortable, but the group small. The time went by so fast. Highly Recommend.

A great experience - The tour covers everything you need for a trip out to the reef, transportation, gear, and food and beverage, and the crew is super helpful. The only downside is that the tour departs from Airlie Beach and stops at Hamilton Island before going out to the reef making the journey op there and back quite long. I recommend napping (which many did) or ensuring you have a book or something to occupy the time. Also, I snorkeled on the fringing reef earlier in my trip. If you are snorkeling and only have time for one, I would recommend the fringing reef over the outer reef.

Disappointing visit to the outer reef. - The weather was not kind to us but the excursion went ahead. Staff on the boat were excellent. My problem arose from having to wear a too small life jacket. Never snorkeled in a life jacket and I have snorkeled extensively previously. Combine the choppy seas and the too small life jacket and I had a catastrophe. the life jacket wouldn't let me lay flat in the water! Much to my embarrassment I needed to be rescued. I definitely failed my Barrier Reef snorkel.
Once again the staff were excellent, One rescuer, trying to put me at ease, told me how he'd needed to be rescued while snorkeling in Fiji, to which I could reply, "I've snorkeled in Fiji and didn't need rescuing!"
Lunch, served on the boat was delicious and plentiful and served hygienically. It was a long trip to and from the Splendor. The part of the reef we visited was disappointing. Even on the semi-submersible I didn't really see much as weather seemed to stir up the sand etc. In good weather this would be a different experience and it's the staff that scored 3 votes.

Great boat but poor reef - We took a snorkel tour to the outer reef and went to Bait Reef. I should let you know that this was our fourth trip to the outer reef in two weeks but the other three were in Cairns and Port Douglas. I was rather disappointed with Bait reef as the coral was predominantly dead and bleached out. I understand that global warming has taken a toll on the reefs but it was really sad to see this reef with so little living coral. There were some fish including a huge Humphead Maori Wrasse and a large Travelly that hung around the boat but this reef did not compare to what we had seen in the Cairns/Port Douglas area where the volume and diversity of species was over the top. Bait reef just looked bleak with so few fish by comparison. The staff were enthusiastic and the boat itself was excellent but the reef was not what I wanted to see. I'm not sure if all the reefs around the Airlie Beach area have experienced this much bleaching but Bait reef has certainly suffered a good deal in the last decade. I did see some signs of regrowth but it could take a decade or two to become what I would call healthy again.
The other thing I did not like was the way the snorkel tour was conducted. On the other three snorkel trips, we were given parameters on where we could snorkel and if we went to far, we would be asked to come back closer to the boat. But we were given a block of time to just explore the reef and gaze at the wanders. If you wanted a tour guide, you could follow one of the boat guides around. On the tour with Ocean Explorer, we had to follow a guide in a very regimented manner and were not allowed to stop and watch the creatures we saw as we were continually asked to keep up with the group. I should mention here that my wife and I have snorkeled for decades all over the world. We are strong swimmers with a great respect for the reef. Neither one of us were happy about the regimented style of follow the leader on this tour. I understand that new snorkelers or weak swimmers need to be watched/guided a little more closely. But I think the good folks on this boat (Ocean Explorer) could use a little more people skills and read the people to understand who is safe to be allowed to snorkel on their own with certain given guidelines ie stay within 100 m of the boat, etc.
Overall, if I were to make a recommendation, I would strongly advise anyone to take a snorkel tour further north in the Cairns or Port Douglas area. That being said there are many, many reefs along the Airlie Beach coast. I suspect some of them are much healthier than Bait reef

Should be renamed "Great Barrier Reef Graveyard Tour" - The friendly staff and nice accommodations on the boat (comfortable seating, good snorkel equipment, and decent food) was overshadowed by what could only be described as a very depressing state of the Great Barrier Reef.
The coral bleaching in recent years has absolutely decimated the reef, which I would estimate to be 80-90% dead. Compared to 10 years ago, when the reef was colorful, vibrant, and full of fish, the current state of the reef is akin to a post world war 2 village that's been bombed to smithereens. Still some fish to be found there for sure, but only a shadow of it's former glory.
The most alarming thing is that the staff made no mention of the decay of the reef, nor made any attempt to discuss any ongoing conservation efforts or what people could do to preserve the remaining natural beauty. The sunscreen they gave out on board was not "reef safe", and contained chemicals that eat away at the coral. In fact, almost all of the sunscreen sold at the local stores contained chemicals that are terrible for the reef. Members of the tour also disregarded the brief mention to not stand on or kick the reef with their flippers.
Given that Explore has been profiting off the tours of the reef for years, they should take their responsibility for conservation more seriously and put that as their core mission going forward.

IF you are a avid Snorkeler you might one too choose a different company - The boat was beautiful well equipped is why they earned a one star rating! Not sure where to begin the reef was all damaged and bleached out so so sad. In the last two weeks I have snorkelled in cairns and port douglas 3 other times so I had a base of comparision They herded you like cattle you never got time too explore and enjoy what reef there was too see and was always being asked to keep up with the group
Sour taste!! One crew member that needs to tone it down a bit is Zoey she was loud and rude and was always telling people too more keep going drove me insane I am an extremely experienced snorkeler and diver and would have like to explore on my own sound a horn and I would have been right back on the ship I know there is rules and I always follow them If they want to take people that have never snorkelled out they put that their advertising as a snorkel tour company
