Climbing Waterfalls and Walking with Elephants: A Chiang Mai Adventure
Leaving behind the bustling streets of Seoul, I embarked on a journey to Chiang Mai, eager to experience the renowned Sticky Waterfalls and the ethical elephant sanctuary. This adventure promised a blend of nature, culture, and unforgettable encounters.
Discovering the Sticky Waterfalls
Arriving in Chiang Mai, I was eager to explore the natural wonders that this region is famous for. The first stop on my adventure was the Bua Thong Waterfalls, affectionately known as the Sticky Waterfalls. Our guide, Poppy, picked us up from our hotel in the Old City, and we made a quick pit stop to grab any last-minute essentials. The drive was scenic, and I could feel the anticipation building as we approached the falls.
The Sticky Waterfalls are a marvel of nature. The limestone deposits create a unique surface that allows you to climb the falls without slipping. It’s a bit of a workout, but the ropes provided make it manageable for everyone. I recommend wearing a bathing suit because you will get wet, but that’s part of the fun! The water is refreshingly cool, and the early morning visit meant we had the place mostly to ourselves. Poppy was fantastic, capturing some great action shots of us climbing the falls.
Bamboo Rafting and Elephant Spotting
After drying off, we headed to the bamboo rafting experience near the elephant sanctuary. Floating down the river on a bamboo raft was a serene experience, with lush greenery surrounding us. The sun was shining, so I was glad I had packed sunscreen and a hat. As we drifted along, we were lucky enough to spot a few elephants grazing by the riverbank. It was a magical moment that felt like something out of a nature documentary.
Midway through the rafting, we stopped at a small riverside stand. I couldn’t resist the fresh coconut water, served straight from the coconut. It was the perfect refreshment for a warm day. The rafting was a peaceful interlude before the excitement of the elephant sanctuary.
A Day with Gentle Giants
The final leg of our journey took us to the elephant sanctuary. Before diving into the activities, we enjoyed a delicious lunch and had the chance to chat with fellow travelers. The sanctuary provides a uniform shirt and hat, which I found useful for keeping my clothes clean during the activities.
We began by learning about the elephants and their care. It was heartwarming to see how well the elephants were treated, living in a stress-free environment. We helped prepare their food, which involved cutting bamboo and making nutrient-rich food balls. Feeding the elephants was a highlight—they are such gentle creatures, and it was a joy to interact with them.
Walking with the elephants across the river was another memorable experience. Be prepared to get wet, but it’s worth it for the chance to be so close to these magnificent animals. As the day came to an end, I browsed the small gift shop for souvenirs to remember this incredible day.
Overall, the Chiang Mai Adventure was a fantastic experience. The activities were well-organized, and Poppy’s guidance made the day even more enjoyable. If you’re in Chiang Mai, I highly recommend this adventure for a day of fun, learning, and unforgettable memories.
