- Angkor Wat - Begin your day early to witness the breathtaking sunrise in front of Angkor Wat. This temple complex is the largest religious monument globally. Initially built as a Hindu temple dedicated to Vishnu for the Khmer Empire, it gradually became a Buddhist temple by the late 12th century. Constructed by Khmer King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century, it stands as a testament to the empire’s grandeur.
- Bayon Temple - Located in Angkor Thom City, this temple was constructed between the late 12th and early 13th century by Jayavarman VII, the most renowned king of Angkor. The fortified city of Angkor Thom, covering 9 square kilometers, was the last and most enduring capital of the Khmer empire.
- Ta Prohm Temple - Known for its enormous trees and sprawling roots, Ta Prohm was built in the late 12th and early 13th century. This “Jungle temple” gained fame from the adventure movie The Tomb Raider, with several scenes filmed here.
- Phnom Bakheng - Dedicated to Shiva, Phnom Bakheng is a temple mountain constructed by King Yasovarman at the end of the 9th century. The term Phnom translates to hill or mountain, and fittingly, Phnom Bakheng is situated atop a hill, offering an ideal spot to watch the sunset over Angkor Wat.
- Banteay Srei - Officially completed on April 22, 967 AD, Banteay Srei was dedicated to Shiva, like many temples of its era. Originally named Tribhuvanamahesvara, meaning the lord of the threefold world, different sections of the temple were dedicated to various gods. The east-west axis and southern buildings were dedicated to Shiva, while the northern parts were dedicated to Vishnu. The modern name “Banteay Srei,” meaning “citadel of the women” or “citadel of beauty,” was inspired by the intricate bas-relief carvings featuring numerous devatas.
