Throughout the centuries, the Angkor Temple complex fell into neglect as the Khmer Empire waned and was eventually deserted in the 15th century. The jungle overtook the temples, concealing them for centuries until a French explorer rediscovered them in the 19th century.

• Bayon Temple - The Bayon Temple is a prominent and iconic temple situated in the ancient city of Angkor in Cambodia. Constructed in the late 12th or early 13th century by King Jayavarman VII, who is noted for his extensive building projects and empire expansion in the region.

Originally dedicated to the Mahayana Buddhist tradition, which was prevalent in Cambodia at the time, the Bayon Temple complex includes various galleries, terraces, and corridors adorned with bas-reliefs depicting historical events, religious ceremonies, and daily life during King Jayavarman VII’s era.

Originally constructed as a Mahayana Buddhist monastery and university dedicated to the king’s mother, Ta Prohm was one of the largest and wealthiest temples in the Angkor Empire, housing over 12,500 people, including priests, dancers, and servants.

Ta Prohm gained international fame in the 20th century when it was featured in the movie “Tomb Raider,” starring Angelina Jolie. The temple’s atmospheric ruins and intertwining trees have made it a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors worldwide to experience its unique fusion of history and nature.

• Ta Nei Temple - Ta Nei Temple is a lesser-known temple within the Angkor Temple complex in Cambodia. Situated about 500 meters east of the Victory Gate entrance to Angkor Thom, Ta Nei Temple was built in the late 12th century during the reign of King Jayavarman VII, the same king who constructed the famous Bayon Temple.

Ta Nei Temple is a small, secluded temple likely built as a place of worship and meditation. It is a single-tier temple with a central tower surrounded by a laterite wall. Although relatively simple in design compared to other temples in the Angkor complex, it features some intricate carvings and bas-reliefs that showcase the artistic and architectural skill of the Khmer Empire.
