David Gareja Monastery - Situated in the Kakheti region of Eastern Georgia, David Gareja is a Georgian Orthodox monastery complex carved into the rock on the semi-desert slopes of Mount Gareja, near the Iori Plateau, approximately 60–70 km southeast of Tbilisi, Georgia’s capital. The complex features numerous cells, churches, chapels, refectories, and living quarters carved into the rock face.
A section of the David Gareja complex (Bertubani Monastery) lies within the border zone between Georgia and Azerbaijan, leading to a border dispute between the two countries. The area is also home to protected wildlife and evidence of some of the earliest human settlements in the region.
Bodbe Monastery of St. Nino - Located 2 km from the town of Sighnaghi in Kakheti, Georgia, the Monastery of St. Nino at Bodbe is a Georgian Orthodox monastic complex and the seat of the Bishops of Bodbe. Originally constructed in the 9th century, it underwent significant renovations, particularly in the 17th century. Now functioning as a nunnery, it is a major pilgrimage site in Georgia, associated with St. Nino, the 4th-century female evangelist of Georgians, whose relics are enshrined there.
Signagi - Signagi, a town in Georgia’s easternmost region of Kakheti, serves as the administrative center of the Signagi Municipality. Despite being one of Georgia’s smallest towns, Signagi is a popular tourist destination due to its location in the heart of Georgia’s wine-growing regions, as well as its charming landscapes, pastel houses, and narrow, cobblestone streets. Perched on a steep hill, Signagi offers views of the expansive Alazani Valley, with the Caucasus Mountains visible in the distance.
Tour to Alaverdi, Tsinandali, and Telavi
Alaverdi St. George Cathedral - Located 25 km (16 mi) from Akhmeta in the Kakheti region of Eastern Georgia, Alaverdi Monastery is a Georgian Eastern Orthodox monastery. While parts of the monastery date back to the 6th century, the current cathedral was constructed in the 11th century by Kvirike III of Kakheti, replacing an older church dedicated to St. George.
Ikalto Monastery Complex - Founded by Saint Zenon, one of the 13 Assyrian Fathers, in the late 6th century, the Ikalto monastery was a prominent cultural and scholastic center in Georgia. An academy was established at the monastery during the reign of King David the Builder by Arsen Ikaltoeli (meaning from Ikalto), an advisor to David IV, in 1106. The Academy of Ikalto educated students in theology, rhetoric, astronomy, philosophy, geography, geometry, arithmetic, music, grammar, chanting, and practical skills such as pottery making, metalwork, viticulture, winemaking, and pharmacology. According to legend, the renowned 12th-century Georgian poet Shota Rustaveli studied there.
Telavi History Museum - The museum complex includes the memorial palace of Kakheti King Erekle II (constructed in 1884-86), a court church, remnants of a philosophy school, a bath, and a tunnel built by Erekle II, as well as the Ketevan Iashvili Art Gallery. The museum houses King Erekle’s belongings, along with a numismatic collection, an early medieval sarcophagus, late medieval armor, and collections of 17th-19th century copper household objects, weapons, and Khevsuretian (East Georgian mountainous region) clothing. The Art Gallery features the private collection (187 items) of Ketevan Iashvili, donated to the museum, including works by 19th-century Dutch, French, German, and Russian (Aivazovsky, Kramskoi, and other Peredvizhniki period artists) painters, as well as works by Georgian artists (E. Akhvlediani, L. Gudiashvili, J. Khutsishvili, etc.).
