Sigiriya The Ancient Rock Fortress - Climb the Sigiriya rock fortress, considered one of the world’s most extraordinary creations, built by King Kashyapa (477-495 AD). A path through the gardens and stone stairways leads to the Lion Gate. Today, only the rock carving and brick structure remain of the lion’s mouth, through which countless visitors have passed to admire this magnificent citadel.
Sigiriya-Polonnaruwa-Sigiriya
Polonnaruwa Vatadage - After breakfast, depart for the royal city of Polonnaruwa. The Ancient City of Polonnaruwa became Sri Lanka’s second capital after Anuradhapura’s destruction in 993. It features Brahmanic monuments built by the Cholas and the monumental ruins of the splendid garden-city created by Parakramabahu I in the 12th century. Return to Sigiriya in the evening.
Sigiriya-Kandy
Matale Herbal and Spice Garden - After breakfast, head to Kandy, stopping at the spice gardens in Matale. Sri Lanka’s spices include Ceylon Cinnamon, Ceylon Pepper, Ceylon Cloves, Ceylon Cardamom, Ceylon Nutmeg, mace, and Vanilla. Essential oils include Ginger, Clove, Cardamom, Ceylon Citronella, and Ceylon Cinnamon.
Kandy View Point - The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is a significant Buddhist religious site in Sri Lanka, housing the sacred Tooth of the Buddha. Kandy Lake, also known as Kiri Muhuda or the ‘Sea of Milk’, is an artificial lake built in 1807 by King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe. The Royal Palace, located north of the Temple of the Tooth, was the royal residence of the Sinhalese monarchy of the Kingdom of Kandy. The ‘Magul Maduwa’, a finely carved timber masterpiece, was where the king met his ministers and conducted daily administrative tasks. Many historic events occurred here, including the British delivering the death sentence to Sri Lankan national heroes Keppatipola Disave and Madugalle Disave. A replica of the Royal Audience Hall of Kandy was constructed in granite in Colombo in 1948 to commemorate Sri Lanka’s Independence from the British. Enjoy a cultural show in the evening.
