• Sigiriya: The Ancient Rock Fortress - Sigiriya, also known as Sinhagiri, is a historic rock fortress situated in the northern Matale District near Dambulla in Sri Lanka’s Central Province. This site is of great historical and archaeological importance, featuring a towering rock column approximately 180 meters (590 feet) tall. According to the ancient Sri Lankan chronicle, the Cūḷavaṃsa, the area was once a dense forest, which transformed into a hill after storms and landslides. King Kashyapa (477 – 495 AD) chose this location for his new capital, constructing his palace atop the rock and adorning its sides with vibrant frescoes. Midway up the rock, he built a gateway shaped like a giant lion, giving the site its name, Sīnhāgiri, or the Lion Rock, similar in etymology to Sinhapura, the Sanskrit name for Singapore, the Lion City.
