Sigiriya The Ancient Rock Fortress - Sigiriya, also known as Sinhagiri, is an ancient rock fortress situated in the northern Matale District, near Dambulla in Sri Lanka’s Central Province. This historically and archaeologically significant site features a towering column of rock about 180 meters (590 feet) high. According to the ancient Sri Lankan chronicle, the Cūḷavaṃsa, the area was initially a vast forest. Following storms and landslides, it transformed into a hill, which King Kashyapa (477 – 495 AD) chose as the location for his new capital. He constructed his palace atop the rock and adorned its sides with vibrant frescoes. Midway up the rock, on a small plateau, he built a gateway shaped like a giant lion. The name Sigiriya, or Sīnhāgiri, meaning Lion Rock, is derived from this lion-shaped structure, similar to the etymology of Sinhapura, the Sanskrit name for Singapore, the Lion City.
