Day 1 – Londorossi Gate to Forest Camp

Day 1 – Londorossi Gate to Forest Camp

The journey begins with a drive from Moshi to Londorossi Gate, taking approximately 4 hours, where entry formalities are completed. Following this, a drive to the Lemosho trailhead takes about an hour. Upon arrival, lunch is served before embarking on a hike through pristine forest leading to the first campsite.
DAY 2 – Forest Camp to Shira Camp 1
Lemosho Route - •Elevation (ft): 8,694ft to 11,840ft /2650m to 3610m
•Distance: 8 km
•Hiking Time: 5-6 hours
•Habitat: Moorland
The trail continues out of the forest into a savannah of tall grasses, heather, and volcanic rock adorned with lichen. The ascent through lush hills and across streams leads to Shira Ridge, followed by a gentle descent to Shira 1 camp. The view of Kibo from the plateau is breathtaking.
DAY 3 – Shira Camp 1 to Shira 2 to Moir Hut

A full day is spent exploring the Shira plateau. The walk east towards Kibo’s glaciered peak across the plateau leads to Shira 2 camp on moorland meadows by a stream. The journey continues to Moir Hut, a less frequented site at the base of Lent Hills, offering excellent acclimatization opportunities with various walks available. Shira is among the highest plateaus on earth.
DAY 4 – Moir Hut via Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
Lemosho Route - Elevation (ft): 13,800ft to 12,926ft /4200m to 3940m
•Distance: 7 km
•Hiking Time: 4-6 hours
•Habitat: Semi Desert
The route continues east from the Shira Plateau up a ridge, passing the junction towards Kibo’s peak. The path then turns southeast towards the Lava Tower, known as the “Shark’s Tooth.” After a stop for lunch and acclimatization, the descent to Barranco camp begins. Although the day ends at the same elevation as it started, it is crucial for acclimatization, preparing the body for the summit day.
DAY 5 – Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

•Distance: 9 km
•Hiking Time: 8-10 hours
•Habitat: Alpine Desert
After breakfast, the journey continues up a steep ridge past the Barranco Wall to the Karanga Valley campsite. From there, the path leads to the junction connecting with the Mweka Trail, continuing up to Barafu Hut. At this point, the South Circuit is completed, offering views of the summit from various angles. Camp is set up here for rest, dinner, and preparation for the summit day. The peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo are visible from this location.
DAY 6 – Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka Hut
Lemosho Route - Elevation (ft): 13,100ft/3995m to 15,331ft/4673m (and down to 10,000ft/3100m)
•Distance: 5 km ascent / 12 km descent
•Hiking Time: 7-8 hours ascent / 4-6 hours descent
•Habitat: Arctic
The day begins around 11:00pm with tea and snacks to warm up for the summit. At midnight, the ascent starts with steep rocks for 2 to 3 hours, followed by a zigzag path leading to the crater rim and finally Stella Point at 18,800 feet/5657m around 6:00am. Here, hikers from other routes join for the final stretch to Uhuru Peak, where a magnificent sunrise awaits, weather permitting. After a brief stay for photos and sightseeing, the descent follows the same trail back to Barafu Camp for rest and brunch, then continues to Mweka Hut. The round trip from base camp to the summit covers 10 km.
DAY 7 – Mweka Camp to Moshi
Lemosho Route - Elevation (ft): 10,000ft/3100m to 5,380ft/1640m
•Distance: 10 km
•Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
•Habitat: Rain Forest
After breakfast, the descent continues to the Mweka Park Gate to receive summit certificates. At lower elevations, conditions may be wet and muddy, so gaiters and trekking poles are helpful. Shorts and t-shirts are usually sufficient, but rain gear and warmer clothing should be kept handy. From the gate, a vehicle transports hikers back to a hotel in Moshi for a hot shower and a refreshing Kilimanjaro beer.
